Start small
We started off with a Lightning ... 19 ft. daysailer that is not too tippy. When you sail a small boat, everything you do has an immediate effect. You learn much quicker and the lessons tend to stay with you (especially if the result is a dunk in the water). We got into racing the lightning and learned a lot about the rules of the road and how to optimize sail trim. After 35 years of racing both one-design and PHRF, we are now into a new Hunter 460 and looking forward to cruising the East Coast.
