Start small

We started off with a Lightning ... 19 ft. daysailer that is not too tippy. When you sail a small boat, everything you do has an immediate effect. You learn much quicker and the lessons tend to stay with you (especially if the result is a dunk in the water). We got into racing the lightning and learned a lot about the rules of the road and how to optimize sail trim. After 35 years of racing both one-design and PHRF, we are now into a new Hunter 460 and looking forward to cruising the East Coast.

Go for it

I knew nothing about sailing when I started. My first boat was a 30 footer, (I still own it). I have been sailing for a year and feel ready to move up. I sail every week all year round and have no regrets. You can not possibly know everything you need or will want at this time. Find something you like in the price range you can afford and go for it. You'll love it.

First Boat

Chip, I agree 100% with Steve from Mandeville. Determine what type of sailing you wish to do and find the appropriate boat to fit your needs. If you wish to cruise, I would recommend buying a boat in the 28 - 32 foot range that you can afford. I bought my first sail boat 4 years ago, a '88 Hunter 33.5. The boat is the ideal size for my needs. It's roomy, sails well, and can take the beating that the Lake can sometimes suprise you with. Some individuals recommend starting small; however, I am happy with my boat and have no desire to "move up" -- I have essentially eliminated the succession of purchases/renovations/selling that many people go through by buying a moderate size boat to start with. Regarding instruction, Call Tim Murray Yachts. I completed a basic sailing course that is ASA sanctioned from Murray's several years ago; I think that they may continue to offer the course. Also check with the Coast Guard Flotillas in the metro area; they occasionally offer sailing courses. Finally, you can contact me if you want to chat @ HovTwo97@aol.com Good Luck, David
