ok now that i have some attention, my depth meter will work some times or just flash -- at other times. i think it is a navco?? it has a threw haul transducer. and i found that the previous owner had painted it with vc 17. i cleaned that off and it still wont consistantly read. so, do i need a new transducer from navco or are they all the same? or is it a diffrent problem all together?

Check connections

The VC17 shouldn't hinder the sounder. My guess would be that you have a loose connection or improper hook up. I would trace all wires and ensure proper connection for power and transducer. Its a pain but could be simple wiring problem.

Check your charts to make sure you get

a reading. Some depth sounders do flash when the depth exceeds their capacity to read. Otherwise, I'm agreeing with Tim. Good luck

not the same

The VC-17 can hinder the performance, that's why they recommend that you don't paint the transducer. VC contains copper. However if the paint is removed, it should work, unless you have a bad connection or the transducer could be bad. They are not all the same but you can try using other brands and you might det lucky. Try placing an ad here on HOW for a used Navico transducer.
