My DCM-12 Needs 14 - 15 Volts to Start

My DCM-12 is 22 years old and has been "on" most of the time. Beginning about a month ago, it won't start unless the voltage is 14 - 15 v (boosted by the alternator or battery charger.) When it does start, it works great although one of the copper tubes has developed a black coating. I've never had the Freon recharged. When the voltage is 12.5 - 13.0 V, it trys to start (sort of a "chug-chug") before giving up. When it trys, the voltage at the panel drops about 1.0 v; the voltage at the unit drops about 1.5 v. I've checked the wiring and even soldered some of the connectors but it hasn't helped. I've got 2 fairly new 8D batteries that show little drop with a 15 amp resistive load. I'd really appreciate any suggestions regarding: - Is it just a wiring problem? (1.5 v drop at the unit when trying to start; no drop when running.) - Could low Freon make it hard to start? (it works great after it starts.) - Could the motor be getting a little tired after 22 years? - Is it worth having A/B try to fix it? - If I replace the motor/compressor, do I have to replace the vertical freezer unit too? - Know any good refrig. technicians in the Vallejo/Benicia area? - Am I alone in disliking warm beer? Thanks for suggestions.

voltage drop

Don, it sure sounds like a voltage drop problem (even if your compressor is 22 years old). Try running new 2 conductor direct to the batteries. Use the correct gage for the distance for 10 amps. Refer to your ColdMachine owners manual or ABYC section E-9.14, table 7. Let me know what happens...
