Loving my C-22! I've owned "Simpler Times" for six years....Getting ready to head to the San Juans the last week of June. I would appreciate any advice/ideas/insights from those who have charted these waters! Tim Alexander

San Juans

Tim: The San Juans are great. We sailed there in our C22 "Sylvan" last September out of Cap Santee's in Anacortes and loved it enough that we'll probably be back about the same time as you this year. My advice, is to buy a copy of a good cruising guide (we used Douglas's), get tide charts from the internet (like try google.com), have a good compass and small GPS, and Map Tech's chart kit for the San Juans, a clock, a weather radio, a marine radio, a good motor, water, and especially a good anchor. Washington State has lots of marine parks, mostly with moorings for $11/night and pit toilets (which means you can get by fine in a C22 w/porta potty, and Washington accepts checks). Try to plan your days to run with the currents, and stay out of the way of Ferrys or other big boats. If you might stray a little north into the Gulf Islands in Canada, be sure to take passports and adequate boat documentation. Dick

Tim - you are going to have fun. One of my favorite books is Gunkholing in the San Juan Islands. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0944257046/qid=1115678974/br=1-9/ref=br_lf_b_9//103-5123419-2785468?v=glance&s=books&n=67552 Another good resource is the list of Washington State Marine Parks: http://www.48north.com/parks/parks_title.htm Anacortes is a pretty good place to think about launching your boat for the Islands - Cap Sante has a lift and storage for trailers, Washington Park is out by the Anacortes Ferry terminal and has a ramp, but I'm not familiar with their parking situation. I believe Skyline Marina - also near the Ferry Terminal has some sort of launch facility - lift I think. There's no easy way through Seattle pulling a trailer. Unless you go in the middle of the night, plan on hitting some traffic, and just gut it out. And don't be lulled into thinking that I405 is some sort of bypass (like you have in Portland) - it's even a bigger mess than I5 at traffic times. There is also some unusual construction projects going on in the next month (repaving and bridge construction)-Check out the DOT website to help with planning: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/seattle/ In the islands, Friday harbor is a fun place to pull into with a little "town" feel to it. One of my favorite places is Stuart Island - very serene and scenic in Reid Harbor, and be sure to take the hike out to the very unique schoolhouse and out further to the lighthouse. Jones Island is another fun little island - fun to hike around and wonderful views. It's a little bit of a haul, but Sucia Island has many little coves with State Park Bouys, and a couple of docks - with miles of coastline and trails to explore. Don't count on the weather being great during the last week in June - we all joke that our summer doesn't start until July 5th! But since you live in Portland, you know what that's all about. You will have a blast! If you had a little extra time, stop into Seattle/Shilshole bay on the last weekend of June (6/24-26) for Catalina Days. A little racing (and the Catalina 30 Nationals) and a little BBQing and partying. Have a Blast! Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle
