OK, you’ve come all this way, what is 7 nm off the track and back? Make a waypoint right now, N31.772 W81.277, for the Sunbury Crab Company.

After my survey of the Walberg Creek entrance, I ran up to the Sunbury Crab Company marina to fill up on fuel and ice and then continued on up around the bend to what is known as Dutchman’s Cove. This is a bend in the river with high bluffs that provide shelter from southerly and westerly winds. It is an unusual spot with nearly vertical bluffs about 20 feet high where the current is continually carving out the bend. There are no houses on the shore. Unfortunately, the light precluded getting any decent pictures. It would have been a good spot to wait out this couple days of blustery weather. However, I was hankering for some restaurant seafood so I moved down to the marina this morning.

I had dinner tonight, a bucket of crabs at half the price I have seen anywhere yet. The owner came over and told me how they throw all the females back and only keep the largest and what they estimate they will serve that night. The crabs I ate were swimming while I was running down from the cove and the difference from ones that have been languishing in a cooler for two or three days is amazing.

It’s an incredibly friendly place. The woman who told me about the crabs was seating people and doing half a dozen things at the same time but insisted on driving me back to the boat in the golf cart because of the rain. I fooled her though and snuck out (after paying). It was one of the best meals I’ve had since leaving Maine.

I was surprised on my walk around the area earlier to learn that this remote spot was once one of the largest seaports in Georgia. This road used to be one of the busiest commercial arteries in the state.

Here is Strider docked at one of the most enjoyable stops of the trip.

Wish they were open for lunch tomorrow. That would be about lunchtime on our way to the Keys tomorrow.

Totally agree that Sunbury Crab Co is a must stop. Ended up here after getting beat up in a nasty storm/front and a companion boat ran aground in the Medway R. Owners Barney & Elaine made us right at home for a couple of days. Barney's sons helped us get the grounded boat going again. They even took us to town for parts and supplies. Ditto on the Excellent food in the restuarant. Great Place, Great People!
