Muscling the Kick Up Rudder

Okay, so how do you get enough leverage from the cockpit to get the kick up rudder up and fully down? Mine is pretty sticky and gravity is no help. Secondly, I just ordered the CD replacement cleat kit for the kick up as the old plastic one is broken. It doesn't specify what size line is used and I want to replace it. Anyone know what diameter line it takes?

Don't know about Catalina but in our Starwind 223 the kick up rudder floats when released and we use a thin downhaul line to pull it forward and down and then cleat in position. The rudder also has a friction adjusting lever to tighten or loosen the nut to the pivot bolt to facilitate raising or lowering it.

I always get on the swim ladder after loosening the pivot point and lift with my right hand. My new Hunter 26 is the same way and the rudder is heaver. I also am trying to think of a simple way to modify it. Thinking 2 pieces of flat stainless steel with roller on the end somehow attached to the rudder and a lift line across the roller. I have loosened the pivot point and intentionally let the rudder hit the sandy bottom to cause it to initially swing then pick it up the rest of the way from the swim ladder. Not the best way but works. I usually do it when I want to back stern to the shore. I just parallel the shore line and get close enough to drag, point out, toss anchor, back to shore, tie off stern anchor, step off swim ladder, pull boat toward beach with small anchor, set it on shore or in shallow water and then relax and drink beer on beach. I want to design a better way also.

Mine is very boyant as most, when it's up its up, hard to get down except for using foot but and when it's down its down, I used a 2-1 pulley system and still tuff but works!

Every couple seasons you have to dismantle the tensioning plate, handle and bolt to polish everything to make it work the way it should. Loosen the tensioning bolt with the handle, lift the rudder with the line and cleat, to lower un-cleat the line, rudder will drop down straight as far as it will go, then tighten up with the handle on the side.
