I have searched "Mufflers", but was unable to find what I needed. I'm looking for pics, or at least a good description of what type of muffler a 1980-1982 Hunter 36 had, and how it would have been mounted.

Here's my problem...

As you can see, it is rusting out and would rather not pump water into the bilge, not to mention the carbon monoxide possibilities. It certainly doesn't look like something the factory put there! But, it's a 27 year old boat, so you have to figure there was at least one lazy previous owner.

I was thinking of putting in a Vetus waterlift, but there isn't much room to mount it. An inline would be my preference. Any suggestions?

Check out Vetus. They have what you need. I suggest that you order the catalogue.

Here is a link that may help too.

It appears that they will be able to help you out. The one on my Hunter is slightly larger in diameter than yours, but is about 2/3 the length.

Thanks Steve. So yours is an inline, and does it mount to anything or it's just held in place by the hoses?

that's the OE muffler from the 80's Hunters.

I don't like Vetus. The plastic they are molded from is to thin to survive an impeller failure or two. The hot exhaust gas without water flow will melt them.

Look around there is a company called Centex that makes 90% of the OE mufflers out there. They should have some options for you. Keep in mind that engine is right at the water line. A water lift would be the proper way to go.

Hey,I have a new muffler that would fit your situation perfectly. It is heavy duty fiberglass. Let me know if you are interested. I will try to post a pic.

Hey Pat, I'll see what I can find on Centex. You think what I have is pretty much what came on my boat? It looks like some kind of automotive muffler to me.

I would be very interested. It needs to be for 2" hose.

I would have to check the hose sizes. Might take a few days. OK

I think Hunter was either making them in house or spec'ing the stainless cans at the time.

The unit you're being offered looks like a Centex style, it'll work if the hose sizes are correct. If your 33 has the 2GM Yanmar it'll use a 2" hose.

Let me know. If it's for 2" I'd really be interested. It looks like it would work, and I'm in no hurry....it will be in the 30's this weekend, so not going to the boat...too cold for us Texas boys!

My muffler just sits in the area under our aft berth. It has feet to mount it but Hunter never secured the muffler (and I don't think they need it either). The hose keeps it from moving around.

Hey Steve, it seemed odd that the muffler would not be mounted, but could never see any provision for mounting. Thanks for the helpful information!

Don't know. Bought it right after I bought my boat. Turns out I didn't need it.

I guess you are right. I just returned from Florida. We stayed with a frend on his 46' cat. His mufflers were just held in place by the hoses as well....

Yeah that looks original

My 27 has what appears to be the same exact muffler. Attached is a picture (but not the best angle). It is also just sitting there supported by the hoses - I found that odd but now I know that mine is not the only one like that. I'm pretty impressed that it has lasted almost 30 years.

Wow, I thought the PO was a shadetree mechanic or something! I have post my pic at another place, and they freaked! Of course on mine, I don't think that strap was original...LOL.

If you like my muffler, check out my album. You can see the inside of my 27 year old fuel tank!

We just got our boat back in March, and going through everything. It's fun, Huh?
