We recommend that you do not change the fluke/shank angle from the standard 32 degrees to the optional 45 degrees on the Fortress anchor unless you know for certain that the bottom is a very soft, soupy type of mud that gives poor holding, As an example, I have spoken with many sailors in the Chesapeake Bay area who use the 45 degree angle on their Fortress anchors with great success. With the 45 degree setting, it is important that you initially put out a scope of 3:1, and then very slowly fall back so the anchor will start to dig in. Once the anchor has started to set, then increase the scope to 5:1.The procedure of starting at 3:1 scope will work equally well at the 32 degree setting in problem mud bottoms. This procedure applies to ALL fluke type anchors.
