Check out Mtv's show "The Real World" in San Deigo. The cast is learning to sail aboard STARS and STRIPES. None of these kids have every even seen a sail boat up close. WOW! I almost forgot, they get paid to do this. They crew for the owner that now charters the boat.

Lake Guntersville?

David, do you sail on Lake Guntersville? My wife is working in Birmingham on a long term project and I'll be spending some time up there over the next year. Also have family and friends in the Athens-Huntsville area. I've only seen part of the lake, but it looks like it has some great sailing areas. Sure would like to get out on it sometime. (marcahoney@cs.com). I sail a 28.5 Hunter on a large lake here in Texas. Those MTV kids don't have a "clew" how lucky they are!!!

look at wheeler lake

Sailing is good on Guntersville but even better on Wheeler Lake just west of Athens. Bigger water, no weeds great facilities.

well, you could always go to St Maarten...

I did the 12 meter challenge and got to race on Canada One from the '88 campaign. I have to say, though it was a lot of show...the day we sailed (against Stars and Stripes '88), the conditions were nothing short of AWESOME (20 knot winds etc)...and though a lot of these people never sailed in their lives, I really enjoyed the whole affair.

I couldn't take it

I was channel surfing and saw this the other night. Since I didn't see the setup I had no idea what they were trying to accomplish. I saw it as a bunch of 20 somethings trying to do something "hard". THEY WERE JUST STEERING A BOAT THROUGH A TACK WITH SOMEONE HOLDING THEIR HAND THE WHOLE WAY!" You would think they were performing heart surgery by the way they were reacting (excuse me, over-reacting) (NO EXCUSE ME, just acting). One girl was having an emotional breakdown of some sort down below. At that point, I turned the TV off and went upstairs to read Don Guillette's book. I hate "reality" TV. Is there a worse way of encouraging the least desirable characteristics of human nature. Give me wrestling anyday. Markdb

No kidding

As much as I love sailing, I don't think I could sit through an episode of Real World. Maybe with the sound off, but I doubt it.

I love reality TV :{

I get so much more reading done now! I do like the Eco Challenge but even the bickering on that gets to me. Tim
