Just got an email note that might be of general interest to this Forum: "A SPECIAL E-MAIL UPDATE FROM PRACTICAL SAILOR—September 2000 "Foul odors emanating from the head are offensive, difficult to cure and, unfortunately, all-too-common. Hoses aren’t the only source of this problem, but they are a major one. Practical Sailor retained an independent lab to test a collection of black rubber and white PVC hose samples. Those clear-cut findings are detailed in September’s "8-WAY HOSE TEST". SeaLand OdorSafe took top billing, pricey at $8.77 per foot, but, in our opinion, worth the added cost. "

That's the hose I recommend...

...and what I put on my own boat last fall. Any chance you might fax me the entire article, Ron? I'd appreciate it!

Only a teaser there, Steve...

However, I could buy the article.:) They cover hoses (I agree with their choice)...heads (Raritan PH II ranks #1 in price range--no surprise there)...and then they recommend inline devices to cure intake seawater odors. Ok...gettin' 2 out of 3 right ain't a bad average. I do not recommend the inline devices. The chemicals in some are destructive to rubber and neoprene...some are damaging to the electrodes in a Lectra/San...and I haven' found one yet that doesn't screw up the bio-activity necessary to keep a holding tank odor-free. Don't get me wrong...I like Practical Sailor...they've always rated the Peal Products brands # 1 or close to it in almost every test in which one was included. However, they have one important failing: their tests only address individual problems without considering the impact on the rest of the system. Inline devices DO drastically reduce intake sea water odors..which ones do that best is their ONLY criteria. Ask 'em what impact the chemicals in the one they like best has on the bio-activity in a holding tank or the seals, valves and gaskets in a marine toilet, or the electrodes in a Lectra/San, and they don't know.

Since Practical Sailor mentions your name in the article I think they should give you a free subscription (or perhaps pay you :^) About the inline treatment systems. I am using the Peal Products so I cannot use the inline treatment systems. However I like the inline treatment idea very much. The concept of treating your head and lubricating the system automatically with every flush including the intake hose is very appealng. Perhaps you should invent something that works with these systems. While I was using the system I didn't have any intake odor problems at all. However the holding tank was another story.
