Moving to the Virgin Islands

I have just been offered a job in the US Virgin Islands. So the question is how to get my boat there. Currently it is on Kentucky Lake and could go down the Tenn-Tom to Mobile, around Florida, then island hop across the caribbean to St. Thomas. I figure this to be about a five or six week trip traveling every day. The vessel is a Catalina 30. Am I crazy? Should I consider shipping by land to FL then sailing? Any thoughts from anyone?

Do you have the time and experience to do it yourself and is the boat fit enough to make the trip? If so, I think it would be a wonderful experience and give you an opportunity to enjoy the trip and other parts of the country you might not otherwise get a chance to see.

I would certainly go for it if I had the opportunity to do so.

The vessel is fit, though I wish I had radar. Don't know if I am as fit as she is. I may have to single hand the entire trip as I don't know anyone who can take off for this period of time.

Has anyone made the trip from Fort Lauderdale island hopping to US Virgin Islands? I expect it is about 1100 nautical miles and I could ship vessel to Fort Lauderdale then sail from there.

You might want to try www.cruisersforum.com. The forum is used by full time cruisers and liveaboards and has a very informative set of discussion boards. I have seen many requests for crew or captain to deliver boats between the VI and US.

Just curious...how were you able to land a job in the VI? I would love to check that out for a stint!
