I'm moving my boat from Smith Mountain Lake, Va to Deltaville, Va. Does anyone recommend a good marina. I'm looking for something that is well protected, and not too expensive.

Stingray Harbor

The closest marina to the bay is Stingray Harbor on Broad Creek. Check with the Nortons there.

Yes, Stingray harbor

Best cruising location on the Bay, right at the mouth of Rappahannock. So on windy days you can turn left and go up river. On better days, you have the whole Bay in front of you. There is a pool and a good voluntary "yacht club" which plans cruises. The only problem is the drinking water is not good. They just spent a lot of money on it to get iron out. There is also a salt problem, though. But all the marinas at the tip of this county have the same water problems. You pretty much have to drink bottled water.

Urbanna

When I lived in Richmond I kept my boat in Urbanna. Its up the river from Deltaville, but very well protected and a littlt bit shorter drive. I kept my boat at Stingray Point for one year, and didn't like it. The marina is fine, but I didn't like the entrance channel from the river. Lots of uncourtious large motorboat traffic in a narrow shoaling channel. Also, if you're sailing a smaller boat you might prefer the somewhat flatter water up the river. The mouth of the river can get quite choppy.

Moving to Deltaville

You'll be happy with Stingray Harbor Marina. This is a sailboat marina with three bath houses and a pool. The Stingray Harbour Yacht Club is very active with monthly activities and week-long cruises. This year the cruise is up the Bay to Annapolis. The marina is close to the Bay and the river. There are a number of very good haul-out locations (one at the marina) and and a number of boat repair shops. Norton's Yacht Sales is close by and is the Hunter dealer in the area. They are very customer oriented and have the best mechanic on the bay. If you are interested in hearing more, please feel free to contact me. I have been at the marina for three years and am very pleased. I am also an officer in the yacht club and would love to get you involved. We have several members who live in Roanoke that could give you some good advice also. There are several other marinas on the river, but being 15 minutes from the Bay meant a lot to me rather than taking an hour or more to get out to the Bay. E-mail address is bob.young@trs.state.va.us

Urbanna Again

Deltaville is okay but it just can't compare to Urbanna. It is the most beautiful little town on the Rappahanock. I keep my Hunter 25.5 at Urbanna Bridge Marina and we love it there. Everything in town is withing walking distance. There are plenty of restaraunts and a large grocery store as well as a laundrymat and an ABC store. The people there are the greatest. Urbanna Creek is absolutely gorgeous. Urbanna is also home to the yearly Oyster Festival in the Fall. In order to get to Deltaville you have to drive right by Urbanna so I urge you to stop in on the way. You'll never want to keep your boat anywhere else.
