I had the marina stand the mast for me. The forestay (roller furling) is in the wrong place and this will not allow the mast to tip back enough to put the backstay where it belongs, so they anchored the split backstay to the alluminum toe rail on each side instead of the steel reinforced rings. Can I adjust and move the stays while it is standing? or is this too dangerous? this thing is over 40 feet off the deck. This is my first year with a rig this big.

The marina should fix it. But for future reference, you can use a halyard as a temporary stay while you unshackle your forestay for maintenanace. Just make sure that it is cleated of tightly, and don't trust a line stopper, use a cleat.

It is not all that difficult but find someone more experienced to help you if you are not certain. The boatyard that did this should correct it though. I doubt that the toerail is anywhere near as strong as the correct attachment points.

More than one attachment point
The bow hardware has three holes. the very front one is higher than the others and is aligned with the length of the boat (this is the correct one), the other two are further back but much lower and crossways to the boat. They attached the forestay to the lowest back hole which pulled the mast too far foreward. I talked to them today and they say they will fix it. I wish I had a photo but I did not have a camera when I was there.

To reset the attachment point is a pretty easy thing to do. The backstay and mainsheet are released, a halyard is lead forward and tensioned. This pulls the mast forward and releases the tension in the headstay. Now it can be relocated to the correct position.
