Moving main sheet fitting on boom

I'm designing a bimini for my 25 O'Day and want to get as much length fore and aft as possible. I'm ending up aft of the backstay--that's the max in that direct- ion. Presently the fitting on the boom is aft of the traveller about 6" if you were to use a plumb bob. Is there any reason I couldn't move it 12" forward? This would make it 6" forward of that imaginary line. It gets hot down here in the summer and I want as much shade as possible.

I See No Problems

Changing the boom bail fitting this little should not effect the sheeting ability. I probably would have done the same, except I have a dodger that would have been interfered. Some have considered moving the traveller up onto and over the companionway hatch, but it can be expensive to buy hardware and more purchase may be needed to increase power. I certainly understand your need for shade. Its a necessity these days. The sun can become a killer.

Bimini

I have a 26 O"Day with a custom made bimini. It covers the cocpit from the stearn to just before the traveler. I have plenty of shade in Fl. Any larger and you will loose space and convience to board the boat under the bimini and your ability to look up at the sails while under way. It is also great protection in a rain shower.

Bimini for O'Day 26

To Neil Walters, Your design is very interesting. Would appreciate any pictures or other information, including about the loft that made the bimini. In particular, I have concerns about insufficient head room under the boom and would like to know how this was addressed.

Thanks Don E

Thanks again. Since I posted my article I've done some experimenting. I've won(?) sunbrella material and ss fit- tings and will make a full size mockup w/pvc. I've already moved the boom fit- ting forward. This can still be altered if it interferes with wing on wing etc. When I'm done I'll post pictures in the photo album.--Norm Lampe

26 O'Day bimini Tom O'Keefe

Tom e mail me your e mail address and I'll try to get you a picture. I had mine made by a canvas shop in Dunedin. The boom is just above the bimini, I am only 5'6" and can barely stand up straight under it. Any more head room and the boom would rub on it. I'll try to draw a diagram of the frame and the zippers that hold it to the frame.
