THE RACE TO ALASKA
750 miles. Icy water. No motors. No support. Described as the Iditarod on a boat with a chance of drowning or being eaten by a Grizzly bear, this epic endurance race attracts intrepid, unhinged characters who find their edge on this punishing course.

Here is the teaser:

Off Center Harbor describes it self as "the world’s leading website for classic boat enthusiasts and professionals". Currently they are the sponsor of the "THE WORLDWIDE CLASSIC BOAT SHOW".

Last night, for the price of Boat Show admission $10 they featured the movie "The Race to Alaska". Knowing the challenges and even at onetime thinking (never OUT LOUD) man that would be an interesting adventure... I watched the replay of the past 8 years of man/woman against the elements that is the R2AK.

Watching the scenes of the first 100nm, water that I have explored I was filled with the need to get on the water and go further north on this route that adventurers travel.

If you have thought, 'man it would be cool to sail off the coast of British Columbia' I encourage you to check out this movie.

Cool, it is, but in so many ways....

If you just need to look at boat pictures, like me, then the online boat show is worth the admission.

I'm a member of that website - The only website I actually pay for. I missed the free R2AK viewing. I hope it's still available. Or maybe it can be viewed directly on YouTube?

I watched it the next day. I think you have access if you bought the $10 ticket to participate on the boat show.

I didn't buy the ticket - yet. I see they've extended the WCB for another 2 weeks. So I should have time to view the movie.

I liked the movie. It really shows the water and country I enjoy sailing.

I watched tonight. Evidently there are several movies about various renditions of the race. The movie I watched was about the North to Alaska team. Enjoyable viewing! I liked the description of the middle part of the race when the crew is sucking wind. That is familiar to me despite I've never spent nine days on an open boat on the West Coast of Canada. But I can relate to sitting on the rail all night, in cold water and bad weather and it sucked. There was a certain satisfaction in enduring. Age has cured me of the need to be uncomfortable. And yet my mind wanders to "It's only nine days, how bad can it be/"

Perspective. I can appreciate your thoughts.
Sailing a 65nm race around an island up here the first weekend in May in 36-38 degree weather was not pleasant. Doing it for 9 or more nights is by some considered insane. Yet in some way admirable. Some are ready to challenge themselves.

I thought about going for the steak knives, but the madness passed pretty quickly. Then I got invited to do the Northwest Passage next year and the idea seems to have some staying power.

I know this thread is old, like me; but, for those with Prime Video the documentary is available free (The Race to Alaska (2022)). Maybe I am a bit prejudiced because I have sailed in about half of those waters but it sure is worth the 1 hr 39 minutes of viewing time. The movie itself is very well done. But those that participate are all worthy of a set of steak knives. Goodness.
