Has anyone out there tried to move the keel winch on a cat 22 aft so that it can be operated from the tiller? That seems to be the only thing keeping me from single handed sailing. Or are my arms too short?
Vernon: Yours is an interesting idea, though probably a lot of work. An alternative for the single-hander is to purchase a "tiller-tamer". Its a simple device that holds the tiller where you set it while you go forward for chores such as cranking the keel, reefing the main, or making coffee. I bought one from Catalina Direct which is satisfactory. Dick
You can buy a fine tiller tamer from Catalina Direct or other marine supply stores. However, you can make your own very cheaply by using some shock cord and small diameter lanyards and two jam or clam cleats. By example:on the port and starboard (left and right) gunwhales install a jam cleat or clam cleat. then make a spliced line thusly:Lanyard shock cord tiller shock cord Lanyard_______--------------O--------------__________ (view aft)At the lanyard ends, secure them to the cleats both port and starboard. You can use your imagination to improve upon the idea but it works well enough to allow you a few moments forward without watching the tiller. Experiment with adjusting the tension on the port/starboard lanyard/shock cord lines to sail a straight course. Have fun sailing!!
