I want to Mount both my Autopilot and my Windguage module to the Pedestal on my 1988 Legend 35. I have a 1" diameter Pedestal Guard with 9 1/2" center. The Problem is I need to extend the Pedestal Guard another 6" for Clearance purposes above the compass. I can find no Guard extensions available but I'm sure I can find stainless stock available to weld on. What I need to know is 1. Will the Two module cases form Vision or Edson work ok on my 1" diameter pedestal and, 2. Won't the hole's you drill in the Pedestal guard weaken the integrity of the guard? My Autopilot will be the ST60 from Raymarine, and the Wind Guage will be Raymarine also. Dave

58" Guard

Why not purchase a new guard that has the room for an instrument pod. THE Link below is to Edsons Marine Catalog

I had a tube made.

Edson only sold their NavPod guard with the top plate. (2001) They wanted $350 then. I had a tube bent for less than $100. Photo #7 and #60.

Problem is...

...If it is like my Legend 37 (1988), the pedestal guard doesn't go all the way down to the deck with two feet. The guard goes down to about half way down the pedestal then curves aft and rejoins the pedestal and attached to the pedestal there. I've spoken to Edson at the Newport Boat show and they told me that this is the only one and they did them for Hunter. Looks like it may need to be custom-made. But the guard has a couple of collars (one on each shaft) just foward, and down a bit, of the compass that you may be able to replace the upper portion of the guard with a custom-made higher loop by loosening the collars. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Cost too much

It would cost me an additional $300 plus the cost of the instrument pod would would tie up an additional $200. By extending the Guard I already have, it will just cost me the price of the instrument housing

Good Idea

Good Ideas..... Where do I go to get the Tubes bent.. Mine is mounted like yours, directly to the pedestal. I found a source in Michigan that I go to that has 12" sections of Stainless thickwall 1" outside diameter tubing. At work I have people that can do the Welding for me to join them together.

We need to know

Fred, who bent the tube, or is your thinking someone here on the east coast that does bowsprits and rails should be capable? hmm yea I'll have to do some calling around..

Pedestal Guard

My Guard is like yours also. I'm fairly certain I have a Source for the Stainless Tubing that I can have welded to the current tube just above the Collar. I like the newer version tubes where they are moved back seven inches, but I dont know if I can find someone to bend the tubing for me.

A local...

...marine fabricator can probably do it. Where I'm located in RI, they are everywhere. There are many shops that build arches, towers, etc., that do it.

R, I had mine done in Everett WA.

Any rail shop can do the work. Even canvas shops that make dodgers. Make sure they work with stainless and stand by their work. Oh, a drawing helps avoid confusion.
