Greetings. Finally dropped the mast, mounted the new organizing plate under the mast step, mounted the deck organizer and rope clutch after sailing them around in the cabin for a couple of years. NOW COMES THE BIMINI. The thing came with self tapping screws. I've checked around the docks and found several with the self tapping screws. I had bought some 2 inch stainless screws and lock nuts. The port quarterbirth has a lower wall (ceiling) with access ports which aren't of course located where I'd like to mount the bimini anchors. What about using the self tapping? I just see cracking gelcoat a coming. The boat is a '76 so its been around a while. Second question. Bought all the hardware except the plate below the mast step from Ruddy. The shackles attached to the blocks don't fit through the hole in the plate (as I found last night as the last step to running the lines aft). Can I grip these with the vise grips and run it against the file to knock it down enough to run through? No grinder and I'd like to do it at the boat if possible. Thanks, Mike

Mike, I also have a '76 Oday 25 and have a Bimini installed. Installed it with self tapping screws. Drill the mounting holes "slightly" undersize then bevel the gel coat end of the holes to prevent cracking of the gel coat when you run the screws in. Works fine.

Which Bimini
Which one did you get and where? I have been wanting to add one to my (new to me)'77 25 but have been a little nervous about drilling holes in the boat. My family and I will be heading to E. TN this weekend and looks like the weather will be great - now if UT can beat GA life would be good.

Scott, I got mine at this site. Seemed a little pricey and it arrived with a bent frame. After much haggleing I forgot about it. It sat for a long time then I straightened the thing myself. Not only was the frame bent BUT I'm not real crazy about the stitching. Both sides are kinda ugly. Luckily for me I'm not to anal about such things. It is a nice green color and thus matches the boat. Talked to a guy this wekend who said his was the only thing he ever bought at Boaters World that he liked. Boatersworld is about the only local place we have. I'd offer to take you out this weekend but I'll be out of town. Next time you're coming this way shout. I grew up in Memphis and spent a bit of time at sarids. I suspect the statute of limitations has now run on what we were doing there! Mike

backstay
How did they handle the backstay? I assume it goes through the middle of the bimini. Thanks for the offer. Same goes here if you ever get this way. I grew up in Morristown and am now living in Bartlett - boat is at Sardis.

I have, what I think is a Boatersworld bimini on my Oday 25. Someone cut a hole in the bimini top that the back stay goes through. Also a new bail was placed on the boom to move the main sheet forward to clear the bimini. It is a lovely white color that matches nothing, but keeps the sun off. Come by Blue Springs marina South of Kingston if you're over this way and take a look.

Mike, don't be to worried about the screws, if mounted properly they work very well. The mounting pads don't really take that much stress as it is all tensioned using straps. King gave an excellent description of the drilling procedure. Don't forget to add a bit of caulking under the head, and let it set up for a half a day before you screw them home. That bimini is gonna save your nogin for sure. Take care. Don
