Has anyone found a good spot for mounting wind and speed instruments other than on the binnacle on a B351? Markdb

Thanks Rich

I havent' seen this positioning ever. Good thinking. I like the away from the binnacle positioning for the same reason you noted. The 351 has a low coachroof so there is no good spot for mounting on the bulkhead. I was thinking that the only place left might be on the mast. Markdb

Why drill holes ??

Hi Mark : On Winpipe (B361) I dealt with this issue a bit "creativly". We have an Autohelm 6000 unit & it has a handheld extention control. When we commisioned the boat, I had the handheld unit & it's plastic holder mounted just inside the companionway entry, to the port side. As this handheld unit has a digital readout for depth, wind, etc, I bought a second plastic storage holder for it, to be used as a secondary control holder for the cockpit. I then bought a small "sticky bag" (those blue plastic mesh bags with the suction cups) & cut off the blue bag part, leaving the white plastic part with the suction cups. It was an easy thing to just fasten the white plastic sticky bag part with it's suction cups to the back of the autohelm remote control holder. So now, when we go sailing & I want to keep an eye on the depth, but also want to recline as we go (as I suspect many of us do) I just stick the suction cup holder out on the bulkhead & place the handheld control into it, set to display the depth. As I also like to keep an eye on our position & speed too, I adjust our little Garmin GPS (176C) that's mounted on it's small extention arm (fastened to the stainless binicle hand-hold) to face me & this allows me to monitor depth, speed & position as we sail along...while I'm relaxing & enjoying the ride with a sasparilla. ;) Best of all...no holes were drilled in the boat.

Raynav remote

Last summer while cruising, I noticed that the new handheld wireless remote for the Raynav autopilot had all the information available on screen from all the instruments on the Sea Talk network. Ostensibly, one could put the instruments any where and use only the remote to provide all data. Jim

Great ideas

I race on other boats (B36s7) right now so I'm very aware of the need for crew to be able to see the instruments. The 351 is now a possibility for a family cruiser but we will club race also. The bar across the companionway is my favorite of these. Do any of the lesser Autohelms have the data or only the ones with remotes? Markdb
