Hi Everyone, Mostly this is aimed at the 26 and 260 boats, but anyone can help. Gives you something to think about, Be Prepared... Still working on the boat getting things placed. Tough question. Where is a good place to mount the two fire extinguishers? Coast Guard wants them mounted or it doesn't count. Thinking on the back of the door under the galley sink. On the Port side wall going down the steps. Trying think this out, you would need one outside and below. Could have a fire in the electrical panel or galley stove, or a fire at the transom around the motor or gas storage. Any suggestions? Jim s/v Java

Fire Extinguishers

I had to go through the same thinking process when I got my H260 a year ago. It looks like you have already done some good thinking about this. You have already identified the most likely places for a fire to occur. The key is to mount the extinguishers where you can reach them quickly, but not where a fire will cut off your access to them. I mounted one, as you suggested, on the port side wall going down the steps. This gives quick access by simply turning around in case of a galley fire and is also fairly easy to get to in case of a fire at the transom. Like in many sailboats, escape from the quarter berth under the cockpit in the H260 requires the occupant to get past the galley, so I felt the need to have an extinguisher within easy reach from the sleeping area in case of a galley fire. I mounted the second extinguisher on the outside of the galley enclosure, on the curved surface facing aft into the quarter berth. Though not required by the Coast Guard for the H260, I have been considering mounting a third extinguisher somewhere in the cockpit, where it will not interfere with people moving about the cockpit, but will still be easily reached. This "extra" extinguisher could be an ABC type, since the ones Hunter supplies with the new boat are BC type extinguishers. The steering pedestal might be a good location if you have wheel steering. Hope this helps. Happy sailing! Ralph C Regar S/V Shambala

Port Mount Best

Have mine mounted on the port wall going down the steps. Has never been in the way and never obstructed movement in any way. I like it there also as do a lot of BBQ's on stern rail and it is within instant reach from inside and out.

My Locations

Put one on the forward side of the galley cabinet. Put the other using a teak piece and hose clamps to the pedestal.

We've got Two

Jim, We carry two extinguishers on our 1996 H26. The first is mounted horizantally in the port cockpit lazerette on the back wall, and the other is mounted vertically to the under side of the cabin steps on the port side out of the way. The gauges on each are easily seen in both locations. I check them frequently just to be safe. "Festivity" H26
