Mounting an outboard

Does anyone have an opinion as to where to mount an outboard (14HP Volvo Penta);1)on a hanging bracket mounted at the stern, or 2) By creating a motor well mounted above and behind the rudder at the stern transom? (Currently the transom is housing a gas tank for a suspect Atomic 4) The idea would be to create a waterproof well that the motor could be raised and lowered from.. My concern is that some people have stated that the inboard /outboard well design creates a problem of water blowing up into the cockpit when in heavy seas.Thanks in advance from an amateur boat builder,Admiral Dave

Fix the A4

Why modify a classic Triton. I would hate to see you cut apart a perfectly good hull just to add an outboard. A4's are very inexpensive to maintain. What is the problem with it? Maybe I can help with that. www.moyermarine.com has a great tech info site and phone number. There are also some A4 lists out there. I think sailboatowners.com may have one. I also think there is one on Yahoo groups.Getting rid of the A4 restricts your ability to ever have hot water or refrigeration while away from the dock.Tim R.

Triton Motor

Outboard wells are an old idea and have well known disadvantages. One of them being you can fill the cockpit with water under certain conditions. This is why you dont see many new designs over 25 ft with them. MY Opinion: You could try the outboard. bracket It would probably mean beefing up the transom. I wouldnt think about any more weight than 75 lbs. I dont think you would want more weight than that on a bracket bashing to weather in a chop . If it dosent work out you could always take the bracket off and fix the atomic 4. I personally havent had good luck with an atomic4 I had an alberg 30 in the 70`s pretty much the same thing as a triton with an atomic 4. The engine was mounted over the bilge as it must be in your boat. If there was any water in the bilge the minute the boat heeled over it splashed on the zenith updraft carburetor and the engine wouldnt start. I finally wound up putting a diesel in the boat but that was in 1972 cost me $1400 for the volvo and $1000 to put it in. A new Diesel is without a doubt your best option but unfortunately at todays prices its going to cost more than the boat is worth. Good LuckBob Fox WhitecaP 1975 P26W #76 Marblehead MA
