Mounting a Yamaha 9.9 HT outboard

I'm working on getting a newly purchased 1993 Mac 26 D model seaworthy. Based on numerous comments on this forum, I opted for the Yamaha 9.9 high thrust outboard and I got it with electric start. It just arrived from the States and in attempting to mount the motor, I find it is very very tight. I expected tight but the tiller arm prevents the outboard from even mounting straight in the motor well. Any similar problems out there? I expected a tight fit and the fact that I would have to rely on steering solely with the ship's rudder but with the tiller arm I can't even raise the engine to the full up position. I am now looking at installing a simple remote control devise and removing the tiller arm altogether. I would greatly appreciate any advice from Mac Classic owners who operate with the Yamaha 9.9 four stroke outboard, both on how to make it fit and any experience with placement and mounting of remote engine controls. (not steering controls) Desperate in Belize.

Shims?

Ted, I don't have a Yamaha 9.9, I am buying a Honda 8 or 9.9. Is it possible to get more room by putting a 1 to 2 inch shim on the back of the transom mount that would move the motor further aft. I think that is what I will have to do for my motor. I may have to file the stop off on the tiller also, so that it will go towards the motor more. Hope these ideas help. Chuck

I have a Newyamaha 9.9 HT also

Ted, I have the same motor as you, a new 9.9 Yamaha HT. I have a Mac 26S classics. We have the same motor transom, it should fit. When you install, move the motor as far to the right side so your tiller will fit. Steer with the rudder tiller. When motoring, have your center board a foot down: so the boat can track on a turn, this prevents drifting on a turn. You might also need a propguard incase your rudder lets loose and hit your prop. Iv'e also seen in this forum, a member who took of the motor tiller to make room and added a tiller on top of the motor, so he could steer with the motor. Overall, Im happy with the motor. I always like to buy a new motor when I buy a new used boat.

Still not fitting

Capt E, Thanks for the reply. Still don't quite get how to make it fit. I have moved the engine all the way to the right and still the extreme left edge of the tiller arm jams against the port side of the motor well, particularly when attempting to tilt the engine to the extreme top position. Are you bolting the engine to the transom or secure it with the screw bolts on the engine? Another reply suggested shimming the motor up on the transom, which may be a solution but that would defeat the purpose of getting an extra long shaft outboard. I have been looking at remoting the engine controls but that will prove quite pricey. I couldn't find that thread you mentioned where the guy took off his tiller and placed it elsewhere. Any suggestions where to find it? Ted

engine fit

Ted I did both: bolting the engine to the transom and secure it with the screw bolts on the engine. I had to make a new bolt hole in the transom so I could move the engine further to the right. I think Chuck meant to shimmy a board back not up, to bring the motor back when you mount it on the transome. The extra long shaft has nothing to do with that nor affect its length.

Ted, I did not mean for you to shim the motor up. Put the shim between the boat transom and the outside motor mount to move the motor farther back aft. It may or may not help. It was just an idea. It has worked on the Honda 9.9. That is what I will do on my Honda extra long shaft. Chuck

Thanks Chuck on the clarification on the shimming. I tried a 1/2 piece of plywood on the outer transom but still no go. Chris, I'm glad you joined in. In cruising some of the archives I came across your name and wanted to contact you direct, if you don't mind. Got an email address? This morning I wrestled with the motor and came to the conclusion there is no way this sucker is going to work with the tiller handle in place so your advice on moving it is welcomed. I tried removing the tiller handle but got to the point where I had to disconnect and remove the wire for the kill switch and just chickened out and re-assembled it. In your photo, I see that my Yamaha (which is a 2006) is different. The cowling is curved so I don't know how I might bolt a flat piece of aluminum on that surface easily. I would like to see your photos of your set up. Did you have to replace the throttle cables? Looking forward to picking your brain on this and a couple of other issues I have.... Ted

Another Possibility??

I was looking around the Internet and came up with another possibility on the mounting of the Yamaha 9.9 HT engine and wanted to see if any one has had any experience with this. I was looking into outboard motor brackets. A heavy duty swing up bracket as made by Garelick would elevate the outboard in the up and stowed position getting it clear of the motor well and in the down and operating position would put the engine about 13 inches aft of the transom keeping it clear of the rudder. It seems that it would allow adjustable vertical depth of the engine while maintaining trim. I would appreciate any comments on this.... Thanks. Ted

I have a Yamaha 9.9 on my 26D. But there is no tiller arm on mine at all, I have a standard remote throtle arangement like you would find on a fishing boat. Im planning on replaceing it with the chrome sailboat throtle assembly though. You just stear the boat with the rudder regardles of being under power or sail.

Thanks Jenni, Where did you mount the remote shift lever? Is it a side mount or a top mount? Ted
