I have a 2006 Cataline 22 Sport and just purchased a Raymarine ST40 Depth instrument. Where is the best accessable place to install the through hull transducer on my Catalina 22 Sport?

On my boat

FWIW: On my boat, they are mounted in the compartment under the forward vee berth. This seems to be a good location, at least given the way that my trailer is designed. I suspect that forward is a good place, especially for the speed sensor, since it may avoid flow changes caused by the keel. My ST40 was mounted there by the PO, so I never thought about the 'best place' option, but since we both have the sport model, perhaps this will help some.

Welcome aboard, good to see another Sport owner.

Don't drill a hole.

Most new depth instruments can be mounted inside a PVC pipe epoxied to the boat hull with mineral oil between the face and the hull. I haven't done this myself but our 38 was mounted that way and I have seen 2 others.
The pipe is epoxied to a fairly thin and flat section of the hull with the major portion of the epoxy on the outside edge of the pipe. The small amount oil is poured in and the instrument installed. The top of the pipe is slotted deep enough to leave a hole large enough to exit the wire below a cap that is pushed on the top of the tube.
You might investigate this before drilling a hole.

Re: Don't drill a hole.

You can also mount the transducer inside the hull with a wax ring seal for a toilet. I've used this method to ensure the location is good, and the depth sounder is operational. I then made the final installation with some thicken'ed WEST epoxy. Shoot's right through the hull, no mess, no leaks....
