Mounting a handheld GPS

I have a Garmin GPS Map 76. I am going to install a holder for the unit (it is a handheld). My boat is a 1982 Hunter 22. It is tiller steered. Where woudl be a good place to put the mounting bracked for the unit so that I could see it while I was under sail?

I put my Magellen on the bulkhead

of my Oday 23. It really seemed to be the only place to put it where it would be semi-out of the way and still visible. It worked fine for a couple of years, but I finally wound up kicking the thing when stepping back into the cockpit. Broke that sucker in half. Of course, the model is so old that Magellan doesn't even have any holders left in stock. I now have three options: try and fix the old holder (how good really is crazy glue?); buy a new generic holder for about $30 (West Marine has 'em); bite the bullet and buy a new handheld with a new holder. Moral of the story: be careful if its an older unit; replacement parts are hard to come by.

Mounted ours using Velcro

On our G-26 we used the really heavy duty Velco pads to mount the holder which holds the Magellan GPS. It has been knocked off a couple of times in heavy racing conditions, but easy to put back in place. We located it with the antennae just even with the top of the cabin on the port cabin bulkhead.

here's how I did mine

... velcro doesn't work well with the 76 becuase the case is slightly curved and there isn't a really good place to attach it. I advise you to mount it high enough so that your passengers don't obstruct your view and you can see it from anyhwhere in the cockpit. As you see, on my C37 the base is screwed into the wood trim along the top of the hatch. The unit is hardwired, left in its bracket and stored in a bulkhead pocket inside the cabin. The wire is 4-5 feet long so I can slip it out of the bracket and hold it or lay it on the bench if I like. If you use batteries it's even easier.

Companionway

I've got a portable Magellan than has a bracket that allows it to be hard-wired to the boats 12v system. I mounted the bracket onto a hatchboard I constructed out of plywood. When not in use, the temporary board w/bracket gets left below on the quarterberth or nav station. Keeps the whole rig out of the elements and within easy enough reach when needed.
