Mounting a Dinghy Engine

I am looking to see where you mount a dinghy engine on the Hunter 386. The taffrail does not appear to have enough straight sections (about 5-6" long) to mount the standard blocks or Edson mounting brackets for the engine. How do you carry or stow your dinghy's outboard engine on your 386? Thanks in advance for your help.

there should be room...

Dan, on my 376 there's just enough room. I mounted the West Marine plastic motor mount on the port stern pulpit between the stern rail seat and the walk through. Plus, I've got a bimini support on that same rail. Admittedly, when you are in that stern-rail seat, you are real chummy with the throttle control.

Outboard Mount

Buy the standard mounting block. Get a 15 inch length of 1 inch diameter stainless tubing. Mount your engine mounting block between the taffrail seat and the rear gate opening. When you squeeze the mounting block together around the sternrail put the length of ss tubing in the opening in the block that normally goes around a vertical tube. When the outboard is mounted, it's weight will make the extra tube ride against the lower sternrail. You can put a plastic bicycle handlebar grip on the lower end of the tube to cushion the contact with the lower sternrail. It works! Well, at least it worked on a 380. Maybe it won't work on your 386. Just kidding.

Mine mounts easily

We have our outboard similar to Larry's but on the other side and it works well. The mount is the plastic cheapie from West. The outboard is to the left of the admiral under the blue cover. It does not interfere with the stern lazarette. You can see the plastic mount sticking out. Especially easy to get on and off. I had it on the other side for a while.

Engine mount on a 410

Nothing works on the 410 because of the angled welds on the stern pulpit. I had the attached fabricated and it came out super. Just make certain that you allow enough space to get the motor's mounting bracket on to the starboard.

Thanks

Thanks for the input. The boat is being shipped tomorrow, so I will have an opportunity to try it myself. Dan

Engine Mount

Thanks for the picture. Several folks say there is room on the 386. Hunter ships the boat tomorrow, so I guess I will find out soon enough. I kept a picture of your design. Loks good. And, thanks again. Dan
