I'd appreciate any feedback on recommended motors for a Hunter 170. Also interested in any experiences with electric motors - do you / would you use one, and, if so, what size?

small outboard

i pushed my 23' with a mercury 3.0hp with no prob. it has an internal gas tank so you won't have any fuel lines or tanks exposed. a 3hp would be great for that size and weight. they're pretty cheep too. i just bought a nissan 8hp from onlineoutboards.com they're pretty cheap, another company is www.sailnet.com they are also very inexpensive. don't go less than 3hp or you will not have a forward and reverse, ithe 2's only has one gear.

Re: motor

Hello Steven, you may want to consider an outboard of the four stroke series. In 2006 the E P A will have two strokes taken off the water. The four strokes come in a wide range of power needs. Also mixing the two stroke gas is a messy task. The four stroke is much less pollution to the water. May good winds be with you. Scott Mathey

Yamaha 4-stroke 5hp

I had a rhodes 19, and bought a new (this was 2 yrs ago) 5 hp Yamaha for $1000. Internal gas tank, or you can hook it to a tank, F-N-R, quiet, no smoke.

I like my Yamaha

4-stroke 4 HP. It always starts on the second pull, pushes my 240 well. Has F-N-R lever. You can use top or remote tank, quiet with no smoke. Cost ~$1400 new. Good Luck!

2 hp merc

i have a 2hp merc and find it too weak, i would recommend a larger engine with reverse and a long shaft

2 Hp Honda

Bought a new 2 HP Honda long shaft, centrifugal clutch, with our new 170. Pushes the boat with no problem. No need for more power. The long shaft is needed, the orignal (short shaft) cavitation plate is right at the water line! The clutch is a nice to have. Especially around the dock! 4 cycle is great, no oil, no smoke. Air cooled removes the clogged intake worries. I burned up a previous engine with lake slime. Won't happen again!

Thanks for advice

Thanks for all the advice. I'm leaning towards the Honda 4-stroke air-cooled - seems it would require less maintenance and be more fuel efficient, and, of course, be cleaner burning. I have bad memories of breathing grey smoke while trolling as a kid! Only big concern is: will it be powerful enough? 2 HP motor at sea level is 1-1.5 HP at over a mile high!
