I have to replace the original motor on my 1984 O'Day 222. It is a 2 stroke Johnson Seahorse 8hp 25" shaft on the original mount (weight about 65 lbs). The problem is there are no 2 strokes of this size available. Does anyone know of the maximum size 4 stroke I can safely use without any modifications to the mount. I need a 25" shaft length and usually sail in Long Island Sound.

Outboard replacement on on Oday 222

Keithcbrown:
The original motor mounts are designed for a 2-stroke engine up to 15 HP. The being said, a long shaft 8 HP 2-stroke is more than adequate to push hull speed.

When I replaced my outboard Sailmaster 6 HP, I got a very nice minimally used 1997 2-stroke Mercury long shaft 8 HP with electric start. My replacement motor even with the electric start- weighs in a 83 pounds- so is well within spec of the original motor mount capacity.

If you really feel you need a 4-stroke, you will need to change out the motor mount and beef up your transom because in addition to the weight, a four stroke generates more torque than the original motor mount is designed to handle. Oh, yes, unless you have rubber arms that are 8 feet long, you'll also most likely need to cut an access hole in the transom (cockpit side) in order to access the motor mount nuts.

This thread dosn't have to do with the motor but he does talk about what is on his 222 you might PM him and get some more in site into it.

While it's true that Chuck, (Lucky Bum) got some great gas mileage out of the 6 Hp 4 stroke outboard on his O'Day 222 sailboat "Get Away" as compared to his Pen Yann, he also experienced a few issues with the 4 stroke that prompted him to buy a used Evinrude 6 Hp 2 stroke last year. As I've mentioned before on this forum, I have a 1999 Johnson 8 Hp 2 stroke on my O'Day 222 and I love it because it's such a dependable engine. I'm going to keep it going for as long as I can. I told Chuck that he should slap the Evinrude 2 stroke on his boat and keep the 4 stroke for a spare.
