Outboard replacement on on Oday 222
Keithcbrown:
The original motor mounts are designed for a 2-stroke engine up to 15 HP. The being said, a long shaft 8 HP 2-stroke is more than adequate to push hull speed.
When I replaced my outboard Sailmaster 6 HP, I got a very nice minimally used 1997 2-stroke Mercury long shaft 8 HP with electric start. My replacement motor even with the electric start- weighs in a 83 pounds- so is well within spec of the original motor mount capacity.
If you really feel you need a 4-stroke, you will need to change out the motor mount and beef up your transom because in addition to the weight, a four stroke generates more torque than the original motor mount is designed to handle. Oh, yes, unless you have rubber arms that are 8 feet long, you'll also most likely need to cut an access hole in the transom (cockpit side) in order to access the motor mount nuts.
