I have a 22 ft Catalina, 1973.......What size 9.9 motor is appropriate? 20" or 25"?

Are you sure about 9.9?

A 9.9 for a 22' boat rather large. A maximum of 8hp is more than sufficient in pushing a boat that size to get hull speed. About your question, Long shafts are usually used on sailboats. Rp.

Is an 8hp motor sufficient for a Catalina 22? Must the long shaft be 20" or 25"?

Eight with a twnty inch shaft should be fine.

A two cycle eight horsepower with a twenty inch shaft is fine for a C-22. This engine should weight about sixty pounds. A two cycle six horsepower with a 20" shaft should also weight about sixty pounds. Unless you mount your outboard particularly high, a 20 inch shaft should be fine. A twenty inch shaft will only add weight without any increase in power.
