I will be purchasing a new outboard for my recently acquired '94 Hunter 26. Which is better: a 20" shaft or a 25" shaft? The old motor is a 20", remote control Tohatsu. Advice is welcomed!

the longer the better, sort of...

...as the off centered motor will cavitate when rolling, more so if 20". Then again, the shorter one is less likely to hit bottom when slowly motoring with rudder and board up to a shallow anchorage. alan

I bought just before Thanksgiving

a 4 cycle Tohatsu 9.8 HP and went for the 25 inch with remote control replacing a 2 cycle 20 inch Toharsu for my 260. I did a 170nm trip with the new motor and for my money I would go with the 25 inch. I do some ocean sailing and am happy with the deeper motor. The bottom of the motor is now about level with the bottom of the raised center board. The only problem I encountered was the heaver 4 cycle, now I leave the motor on the boat instead of attaching at launch time. John USNret
