motor on stern pulpit

OK ..I have a 9.9 four stroke Yamaha, outboard for our dingy, it weighs around 85 lbs im overly anal bout this but hanging a outboard on the stern pulpit, makes me nervous, it seems like I should beef up the stanchion bases.and or the backing plates ,has any one else have any dealings with this good or bad I see, motors all the time mounted in this fashion, I don't know ,it seems like a murphy's dream...Thanks in advance for any and all advice,

I hope it holds an 85 lbs outboard as I count on it holding my 200+ lbs to prevent me from falling off the cockpit in rough seas. I have never seen a problem so you should be fine.

No Problem

I have a 8HP Yamaha on my H-36 Stern and also have davits same place,
I keep my 8HP on my dinghy on the davits hanging off the stern and have
never seen a problem at all.

You have to consider the back and forth motion the motor turns the rail into cycles of moving to and fro- it's not like it just sits there. But all rails are different, so it's hard to say what your boat needs. If you're concerned, I'd find a way to brace the rail with stainless bar or tube. I have a Honda 5 and worry about the same thing. "One of these days" I'll put in the brace.

s-t-r-e-t-c-h... . If you tighten the rope, then you'd most likely pull the rail out of normal position, and strain the base connection. He needs to take the motor off, find the static position of the rail, and brace it. THEN put the motor back on.

This is how I do it

I agree that the rail will hold the engine when hanging on the outside of the rail, but I use the boom and boom vang to hoist the engine onboard. This brings the engine into the cockpit and I won't sling it over the rail by hand so I mount it on the inside. We only do this when we're on passage which is only a couple of times per season. Otherwise, we tow our dinghy with the engine mounted. This is not the ideal situation for everyone but it works well for us.

I installed a two part "T" with a section of SS tubing down the the deck for support for the motor mount on our C-22. We've up-graded to a 2 HP Honda now, and it works equally as well.
