Ok, Im a tight-wad! I need to purchase a new motor for a 23.5 Hunter. I would like to purchase an 8hp shortshaft so I may use it on a johnboat also! Has anyone ever installed one of the drop down kicker motor mounts on a hunter 23.5? Do you think this may work or would it put the engine too far back? Thanks

I used a shortshaft engine on a similar boat and it was not fun ! Ya had to position the crew in the stern corner where the motor was to keep the prop in the water.. It would be much better to put a raised mount (if necessary) on the Johnboat to accomodate the longer shaft.. Only if you sail in a place where there are NO waves will you be happy with the short shaft on the sailboat.

I try to make things easier to do on my boat rather then more difficult. Back strain isn't one of my favorite things.

I have a short shaft... and HATE it. Next $$$ I get is going for something else (not boat related). But the next $$$ might get me a long shaft. :Liar:

If your short shaft works well, most can be extended to long shaft.Had a Evenrude extended .Worked great for years until I upgraded to aYamaha 4 stroke6 hp.Added Dual thrust prop to motor what a difference ,can idle out of slip.

Extend the 15" Shaft to a 20" One

I extended my Mercury from a 20" to a 25". Look for Bay Manufacturing in Milan Ohio, See if they have a kit, If you can change an impellor you can do this yourself.
