Removed the shell first
The guitar string sounds like a great option. I wish I had thought of it when I removed this. However, when I did this last year on my 222, I took a Dremel tool and cut away most of the the flat surface of the fiberglass shell from the wedge. I was then able to peel away the sides of the shell exposing the foam core. The core actually had small pieces of plywood embedded in it, presumably for support. I was then able to use a paint scraper to get the foam core off, a little at a time, with no problem. It's not actually glued. I think they just used some chalk to seal against water seepage. It came off quite cleanly. Just be careful not to gouge the gel coat of the boat during the removal. I then replaced the motor mount with a Gaerlick mount which has pivots to replace the angle from the wedge. Note that I had to add a small spacer (I actually cut out a piece of plastic cutting board surface that was purchased from Home Depot) so the handle of the motor mount didn't wedge under the rub-rail when I pulled it up. I sealed this with marine chalk. Note that I also beefed up the backing plate when I mounted the motor mount. All in all, it was not a difficult fix and the new mount is a lot more stable.
