I have a 4 stroke new Honda engine. The motor mount bends when I am going full stroke. However, going slowly works great. It is dangerous? Do I have to change the mount? Which you all advise? Thank you. RB

Motor Mount

I replace my motor mount when I put on a 6 hp Merc. The fiberglass appeared to have cracked and I did not want to lose the motor. I fabricated a motor mount from 3/8" aluminum and extended it farther from the back of the boat, this allowed me to have room to drop the tller/throttle down and still be able to turn without hitting the stern. I have had no trouble, was an easy fix.

what size?

How many horses are we talkin? My 5 horse Honda is no problem although my bracket has some surface cracks and I've wondered about the flexing. I would think that this bracket has some steel inside it. Does anybody know about this? What about bolting rods across the top of the verticals on the bracket?

What Type

If you moter mount is the same U shaped fiberglass one that my 23.5 had then the bending will only get worse. I had a 9.9 Honda 4 stroke on mine and it was bending so badly that my forward thrust was horrible. All the thrust was attempting to raise the stern and drive the bow down. I was also afraid of losing the engine. As soon as I notice it I heading back to port and put the engine in the cockpit. I replace it with a standard bolt on engine bracket, which works fine. The hard part was getting the old bracket off.

Motor mount repaired

I have a Honda 5 hp on the same style of mount everyone is talking about. I have a wire/cable that attaches to the engine, though it would not be fun to have the mount and motero fall off. The motor mount was cracked when I purchased the boat. I had the gel coat repaired last fall. It looks real nice and I hope it lasts. I will let the HOW site know how it holds up. Send me your E-mail address, I hope to be down at my boat this weekend. I will take a picture and e-mail it to you. Much easier to see than to explain. rwheel@ix.netcom.com
