My 94 26 came with a Johnson 9.9 2 stroke. It seems to be in good condition, and runs well. Still, I have been thinking about a 4 stroke -- perhaps an 8. Will the 8 be strong enough? What about weight? Any recommendations on types of 4 strokes, or staying with the 2 stroke?? (Regardless I want controls in the cockpit!) Thanks, Michael

Yamaha T9.9...

...I just replaced my Nissan 8hp 2-stroke with a Yamaha 9.9hp 4-stroke long shaft(the high thrust model). The Nissan was fine for most conditions, and top speed is almost as good as the Yamaha, but the Yamaha is better for short bursts of speed. It's also much quieter, much more miserly with gas (despite the extra 2hp), has a higher amp alternator, and no messing with oil mixing. I added a single lever remote throttle mounted on the starboard sternrail; no more reaching (and looking) back to find reverse while coming into the slip!

I have the Johnson 8 on my '94 26.

In very high wind conditions I think the 9.9 would do better. Get a 25" shaft as that will go below floating weeds and not suck air as much when motoring in the chop. alan

Pros of 2 vs 4 stroke

2 Stroke pros + Lower purchase price and you already have one! + Lighter in wieght for given HP + No Crank case oil to check and change + No Valves to adjust 4 Stroke pros + Less Noisey + Less exhaust fume + Environmentally better + No oil mix in fuel + Better mileage + Better low RPM operation My 2 cents... If I had to replace a motor that didn't work or was specing a new boat, I'd pick a 4 stroke. However, I wouldn't replace a perfectly good 2 stroke that was operating well -- unless I planned on doing a lot of motoring and was distrurbed by the noise and smoke from a 2 stroke. Fair winds, Tom

4-stroke weight?

I have a 2-stroke and have thought about a 4-stroke. I wander about the additional weight of the 4-stroke. They can be quite abit heavier. Anybody with any thoughts on this. Corky

honda 9.9

I have the honda '02 9.9 and I love it.fast, clean, QUIET.the boat moves great with the hp. and it backs into the slip great. the 4 blade prop on the long shaft is the best for control. don't trash your current motor though .get a better prop for the way you use it.good luck.R

Weight

My old Nissan 8hp 2-stroke weighed 64 lbs. The Yamaha 9.9 4-stroke weighs 95 lbs. The extra weight has had no noticeable effect except on my back when wrestling the thing onto the transom.

FYI

I have a Honda 8hp has all the power one could need. The weight is 81 pounds but it has a 3 gal. tank a 2cycle motor weighs 69 pounds but will have a 5 gal. tank which is another 20 pounds, so they weigh the same and the honda will go longer on 3 gal. of gas.
