Motor dragging...

Anyone else out there who has a "23" with a Johnson 9.9 Sailmaster motor? When we have 3-4 in the cockpit, the motor in the up position drags in the water... It's a long shaft and I'm tempted for next season, to move the motor mount higher on the transom... I don't see an easy way to raise it any further... Design flaw by Johnson or Hunter?

Whoa...

I had a Johnson 9.9 for a Catalina 25 and found it immensely valuable in rough seas with only one or two people on board. You want that prop in the water when you need it, not bobbing around.

had the same motor and same boat

my problem was that the motor was too high. i eventually lowered the mount so it's deeper in the water. i also ditched it for an 8hp. didn't want the extra weight.

Motor problems

I have the Johnson 9.9 Sailmaster too. I concur with the others, the previous owner(s) modified the original mount by beefing it up and installing the retractable bracket. I think they installed it as low as you can go and if anything, the motor still sits too high not too low. Why do I say this? When I have the motor idling AND while standing on the bow to pull up the anchor, the motor cavitates. I guess the real solution is buy your next motor that has a 25 in. shaft. Bob

mine was 25"

i also had a problem with the prop being angled too high. now my 8hp goes directly aft

motor lengths

When buying sailboats, I always recommend the long shaft which is 20 inches. Stay away from the 15 inch shaft for obvious reasons to include daysailors. If out in the salt pond or ocean in following seas, sometinmes the back of the sailboat will be raised high and the motor will come out momentarily and of course the sound you will hear but it willnot hurt the engine if water colled in most cases. I recommend a 25 inch shaft for the ocean but when coming in, it may be too long and thus drag. When looking at either new or used engines, the length is of course needs to be determined for the styly boat which is being purchased. If it is an older boat or simply you want the 25 inch shaft, then a swing up styly outboard motor bracket is recommended and not a fixed mount like on the 23 Hunter wing keel. Hope this helps you all. Crazy Dave Condon
