I installed a boat alarm from Flagship Marine.

http://www.boatalarm.com/

It is hooked to deck sensors and can be configured with many devices. Absolutely zero false alarms. It learns the natural boat frequency and only triggers an alarm when it senses the deck flexing when someone walks on the boat.

Had a break in at our home port which pushed me to install the alarm. Kind of like closing the barn door after the horses have bolted but it is piece of mind.

We have used one from a major home store (Less than US $20.00) in Mexico for years. Looks like;

We mounted it on a small board, like a free paint stirrer, under the dodger, pointing at the cockpit sole. Only goes off if some one steps into the boat. Have almost no false alarms.

Can also be moved and used like a doorbell hen some one stands on the dock next to the cockpit.:)

Just get a shotgun.... One rack of the pump usually scares the sh*t out of 99% of the public..
Actually, forget that, or else bird poop won't be the only poop you'll be washing off your cockpit.

Working the action to deter works in the movies, however in real life that is not done. Any moving part of a gun, are not moved until a decision has been made to shoot someone. That is always a lasting decision you live with forever. Never keep and use a gun as a bluff agent. A gun is a tool you hope you never use.

To keep a record of prowlers, a game camera mounted on the mast would work good. A security light would keep people off the boat. Harbor freight has powerful solar led models.

I beg to differ...chambering a round in a shotgun has worked for me on more than one occasion and kept the intruders/trespassers face down on the ground until the cops arrived. I am prepared to use it and only when it's a last resort. Both times were in defense of property during burglaries.

Your game camera idea is a very good one. I've thought of installing one on my boat just to keep and eye on things remotely.

I cant wait to use my guns! To go hunting that is! But then again it is a sad time cause it usually mean boating season is over. Put a sticker on the boat: NOTICE TO TRESPASSER, In day time you might get some broken part, At night time we shoot....

With all these creative idea's, might as well consider running a cattle electric fence around the railing?? I imagine it will get a drunks attention

Last week someone unhooked the snap shackle on my boat while on a mooring. I was asleep on the boat! I heard some rattling around but didn't think it was anything other than the windy night. I'm glad I had tied a bridle or who knows ware I would have woken up.
Out clubs race shack was broken into the weekend before and another boat was let go off of a mooring.
I keep my boat at dock and only moor out if we are sleeping on it. Keeps the racoons off. My wife isn't a fan of racoons.
I have a sticker on the back of my boat that says, "This area is under video surveillance".

I have a wireless "DRIVEWAY PATROL" motion detector which is sensitive enough to detect a skunk crossing the beam.
Each piece - the sender and the alarm are about the size of two decks of cards. The sender runs on a 9 volt and the alarm on"D" batterries. Seems thet if the sender were set on the cockpit sole there would be no relative motion that would be picked up?

being boarded

As full time live aboard cruisers, if anyone were to come aboard, uninvited, in the middle of the night, cocking a gun would only be the first step. I certainly would not want to deal with the local authorities in a foreign country if I left an intruder injured or not, but able to cause US problems, when we were only protecting ourselves.
In your case though, you might want to have a tape of a pretty angry dog trying to get out of the cabin. Even have it go on from the laser?
