I am looking for anyone who knows about a 65' yacht that sailed around 1914 in the Chicago/Mac race. She was built around 1900 and dismanteled in Wisconsin around 1970. Joy Morton of Morton Salt owner her, but he passed away in 1934. I am looking for information on two things: (1) Details about the boat herself, and (2) details about who would know entrants and race results from her era. Her name was Volante. Thanks.

You might try Chicago Yacht Club, which sponsors the Mac. They seem to have pretty good records. I'm guessing Morton may have been a member there as well.

Now there is a poorly designed website. Don't have cookies turned on and the site cycles itself. LOL

Volante's prop

:dance:I was in a Wis. boatyard about 1980 and saw a lovely bronze 3-blade prop lying against the wall. I asked about it and he said it came from Volante, the Morton's boat, that was broken up there. I bought it for $50, including a round bronze plate with the name Volante. He said the plate was a winch cap. Obviously not a modern winch, no hole for a handle.
:dance:I was crewing a Mac race in the late 70's and a member of the crew was a big guy and good sailor. I mentioned buying the prop and he lit up. "I've sailed on that boat" he said. As a college kid before WWII he was a crewman on Volante for the Mortons. He spoke highly of them, both as sailors and as nice people. He said it sailed the Mac.
 I gave the prop to my son in CA some years ago and he asked me just last week whast I knew. He might like to contact you. eMail him at lazear2@gmail.com and copy me at blazear@cs.com please.
:dance:Good hunting. - harbourbill

I am looking for information about another Morton yacht, the "Freedom" which was briefly owned by a friend before she sank in an NYC area moor around 2003. If anyone knows of this craft and its history, please contact mr at kidbklyn718@me.com.
