I am wanting to replace the throttle lever on my Morgan OI. Does anyone have a suggestion on where I might start looking. I have tried a general search on the internet and Ebay; to no avail. Any help is appreaciated!

Just the lever? Do you have a photo of the current arrangement? Do you know the make of the pedestal or throttle ?

The throttle mechanism works fine. The handle/lever is very corroded. Wanting to replace it for aesthetics, only. I will post a couple of pictures.

That would be helpful.

My boat had a crummy plastic lever that felt like it would snap off at any time. It has an Edson pedestal with the throttle level on the pedestal.
I found a stainless steel one on a derelict old boating being cut up. I took it home and polished it up a bit, and today it looks brand new.

If it just has a bit of surface rust, maybe it can be polished up.

If it is an Edson Pedestal, there are replacements available at Edson and Defender.com. Be prepared for sticker shock.

The lever, is aluminum and is very corroded. No fixing this thing. I’ll pictures later. Thanks everyone.

I see what you mean….I doubt that thing could be polished up.

Doesn’t look like anything I have seen. Not sure it is original to the pedestal either.

You may have to take it off the shaft (hopefully it will come off), and see what sort of shaft it fits on (square shaft, size?) and also see if there are any identification marks on the throttle lever (inside the pedestal) and maybe that leads to something. If nothing else, with the shaft shape/size, maybe you could have one made.

Maybe others will beto chime in.

Yeah, I’m going to open up the pedestal cover and look closer at the mechanism. Old boats….never simple to fix. Thanks,
Mark

If we could see the shaft and how the lever engages, we could see if something like this would work…

Morse is a common marine throttle manufacturer and this one says “vintage”…

If the mounting screws come out easily, this is not difficult to replace. While you have it apart consider replacing the throttle and shift cables.

There is only one manufacturer of this type of engine control for sailboats and it should be close to a drop-in fit. The hardest part of the job is getting the shift cable adjusted correctly. Check YouTube University for some pointers.

Do you have a separate transmission lever? Or is this a single-lever throttle/transmission shifter?

You should lie down in the shade and rethink this. That's vintage cast aluminum, they don't make 'em like that anymore. It's not broke, you are the only person even notices it. That can't be the ugliest thing on your boat demanding attention is it?

Good advice once he sees the replacement cost for a new shift.

There should be a set screw on the bottom of the handle. Put the handle all the way forward or back and the screw should be visible. If the screw comes out, then the handle should just slide off the shaft, although the corrosion may make this a bit challenging. Once off, try polishing the handle. If that doesn't work, then the handle @Tally Ho or a similar one should work. If the handle doesn't come off, then your options get more limited, live with it or by a new shifter.

The button in the center of the handle should push in so that the engine speed can be increased without engaging the transmission. If that button doesn't depress or is very hard to depress, remove the whole unit and try cleaning it up and inspect the cables while it is out.

Since you're just going to look at this you should be able to go to a a model hobby shop and get some heat shrink of the color you desire, even mirrored surface if pink is not your favorite color. Surface prep is clean and dry to apply and think would be tempted to get an actual piece of heat shrink tubing for the handle part that you have to touch. Of course powder coating cobalt blue would be nice also but I don't think a wife will let you use the oven for that.
