Well, we had my son's 12th birthday aboard the boat this week-end, and after a couple of days aboard with 5 boys, I've got a question or two. 1) The black water tank. Yes, it's not big enough. But, I'm lazy & have not traced it out yet, so just what does the Gusher pump mounted under the sink do? 2) Has anyone found a reasonable-sized ice chest that will fit under the helm seat? Seems like a perfect place to keep such a thing in the cockpit. 3) Has anyone fitted a shower sump? Where did you put it? How do you gain access to the area under the shower? 4) Has anyone fitted an engine exhaust blower or a vent someplace for the engine? 5) Has anyone added gate eyes to the lifelines in the stern sides? Thats all for now! Thanks!

Happy Birthday!

Tom: 1. The pump is probably for the holding tank overboard discharge. You need to find the y-valve which will switch from the deck pump out to the overboard discharge. 2. Can't help you with the cooler, is there something that is going to keep it from going out the stern? 3. Check Attwood, their sumps are a little lower profile than Rule, they also make some low profile bilge pumps too. 4. This was just a subject of a post in the last week or so (not for the V-32). Why do you want a blower for the engine? (just a question) 5. If you call a rigger they can put a eye on your lifelines at the last stanchion. Then reverse the gate so the lifeline will open at that eye rather than the stern pulpit. Sounds like you are enjoying the boat and the life of Riley!!! How are the job prospects looking?

Here's What I've Found

You are braver than I. Five boys on the boat for a weekend! I'll bet they had a ball! 1) As Steve Dion indicated, the pump is for the holding tank overboard discharge. There isn't a y-valve on my system. Its tee'd coming out of the holding tank, one side going to the deck discharge, the other side going thru the manual pump to the overboard discharge thru-hull. You open the thru-hull and pump, and it empties the holding tank overboard. Used to take me about 125 strokes to empty the tank. 2) Can't help with the cooler either, but the stearn ladder would keep in aboard. 3) I've had my shower floor up to glass in an extra stringer in that area. There isn't much room under the floor, and it looks too shallow to allow installation of a shower sump, unless it was custom build, but I didn't get any measurements. I've thought about adding a sump as well, but just use the shower in the stearn instead. I might look into it again next year, but it would be a big job. 4) I'm with Steve Dion. Why do you want a blower? I've never had any fuel smells in the boat, and the diesel has always run fine. The only good think I can think that the blower would add is a way to get rid of excess heat after running. When we anchor, especially in summer, the heat from running the engine does cause the rear cabin to heat up a lot. A blower could cut down on the heat buildup. 5) I installed new lifelines last year and installed gates on both sides of the boat. I chose to unhook them at the stearn pulpit, and run them back to the next stanchion forward, where I temporarily hook them to keep them up and out of the way. Keep the questions coming! Mike

It's the heat!

Mike & Steve have the right question, and Mike is right on with the heat issue. I get very little diesel smell, but it gets warm in the engine box and with the riser at the aft end, very near the wall, the aft cabin gets mighty warm! I am going to check it with a remote thermometer next time I go out, and I'll let you all know. A blower or even a fan would help quite a bit. Thanks to all on the lifelines & other questions. I may have to make my own ice chest, but that should be pretty simple with the variety of plastic tubs available at the local target store. Mike, I'm still curious about your battery access door, see the question in the earlier post. Also, what do you think about using white LEDs in the disco light bar? BTE, Job hunting stinks right now here in the Bay Area, as employers are being very, very selective. I have seen jobs that first popped up 45 days ago re-listed recently on Monster & Hot Jobs. This indicates to me that while one or two of the folks that applied the first were good choices (I know, because I was one of them!), employers are holding out for someone that is "perfect", whatever that means. More power to everyone, I just hope the economy (mine included) does not sink further into the toilet while perfect job candidates are sought after!

Excess heat

All has been covered and I read all these Vision post carefully: on the engine heat I sometimes open the starboard engine cover in the bathroom, I open both windows up and the heat escapes: it also dries out the bathroom and there is very little heat in the cabin. Cost nothing....for once. Jean Hrab

Jean, You have a good point!

I especially like that it helps dry out the head!

engine compartment blower/shower pump

Motoring in FL with ocean at 88F causes considerable heat buildup. I installed a blower fan above the engine with 4 inch air hose run alongside shaft and exhaust, partially cut access into rear bulkhead and vented under the helmsmans seat. Runs with the engine and extracts hot air. Installed shower pump under the icebox. Internally stepped down the shower drain hose to fit 1/2in pump and added overboard hose alongside bilge hose. Lifted floor and cut new holes into and out of starboard locker. Exits hull beside bilge hose. Works great. Also cut shower floor to install stringer against hull. No room there for a pump.
