To remove the drum from the drum brake, do you need to remove the bearing dust cap and take out the bearings first? Oddly enough I worked on the brakes last fall, but now can't remember the procedure for the life of me. See "related link" for my previous drum brake question/problem. Thanks, Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

You Got It

Only you do not need to remove the bearings from the drum to get to the brakes. Just remove and discard the cotter pin loosen the nut and pull the drum. You can even leave the wheel attached although it is a little unwieldy just because it is big. However if you have gone this far it is silly not to remove the bearings clean and repack them. All you need to do that is grease, and a new seal and cotter pin. My wife makes me wear gloves to do that she says my hands stink if I don't. Find a gear head there who would like to go sailing if you need help.

Thanks Rick

Thanks Rick. I don't know why I drew a blank on this procedure. Oddly enough I am (was) a gearhead (mechanical engineer). Too many years in sales has allowed my mechanical mind to go to mush. Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

Funny Engineer Story

Here's a scary but true story about an engineer. The names have been ommited to protect the inocent: A co-worker of mine was socializing on the weekend with a customer, who is an engineer. In the engineer's apartment he notices a cup of water in the microwave and inquires about it. The engineer explains that he likes to eat microwave popcorn, but it comes out burnt if he leaves it in for the time recommended on the package. So, he takes out he popcorn early and then puts the cup of water back in the microwave and let's the device complete the prescribed time. The engineer says that the water is needed because a microwave will be damaged if allowed to run empty. Talk about missing the forest for the trees. Yikes! Ron
