The original '81 "O'Day Cruisers" brochure that came with my boat specifically makes mention of sailing with centerboard down AND with centerboard up. As the lake I am headed to has lots of thin water I thought the following question would be pertinent. What is your experience doing it either way or both?

Unless you're racing

Unless You're racing or need to get to weather as much as possible to stay in a channel, the boat will sail nicely with the board up. My OD25 sails in thin water also and I seldom use the board. Leeway is minimal until we sheet in past 45 degrees apparent. PM

Board up or down

I have on Oday 23 and sail with the board down when on a close reach or beam reach. Board comes up when running or broad reaching. Board down give me pointing ability; board up gives me speed. Another situation for board up is in very light winds when you do not need either all that ballast or drag below water. Paul

Board positions

It is quite common in racing class dinghies to change the depth of the board on every new leg of the course. Learning to sail a Laser well is as much about board position as it is about sail trim. On those boats you have to drop the board somewhat on upwind legs because there is no keelson to help you to windward. On your O'day 25, the C/B trunk/keelson will provide a lot of lift and should be an effective blade in most conditions. I would make sure it is as fair as possible as you want the flow of the water over the surface to be as laminar (smooth) as possible. You might consider raising the board somewhat even in deep water if you wind your boat is heeling excessively. By allowing a greater degree of leeway, you will reduce heeling substantially. High wind dinghy races we would have very little blade in the water at all. Greater leeway means a further from the wind, but VMG is better, so you get where you're going faster.
