the boat arrived yesterday and he looks great, stepping was pretty bad with only 3 people but we got it up. I let the people who delivered it leave and enjoyed exploring the girl. I did find the owners manual so if anyone needs a copy let me know and I can either snail or email it. (my server is slow so snail is best) Now for questions. 1) I read that you need to check cooling levels, I was told it is an open system? 2) Dip stick for fuel only goes in 4 or 5 inches and hit a plate and want go any further, what it the trick? 3) It has a lazyjack system and I had trouble raising main without battens hitting/catching on the line. Is the always a problem or is there a way to do it where they slide stright thru. I am sure I will have more questions so I hope I dont wear out my welcome here. I am amazed at how different the 272 and smaller boats. Thanks Jim

lazy-jack

You can use some bungee cord to pull the lazy-jack back to the shroud. This should allow the main to be raised with out catching the batons.

272 owners manual

I have a stuffing box question. DOES YOUR MANUAL QUOTE 3/16 FLAX? My manual does. Other owners swear it should be 1/4. I have installed 1/4 but it was very difficult to install. 3/16 goes in easily, but perhaps too easily. I don't want to get launched and find I have the wrong flax

Dip stick etc.

Jim, there is some 6" to 8" of hose that connects the fuel deck fitting to the tank and in my boat they are not well aligned, so some angled jiggleing is required, stay with it. I have a Westerbeke diesel and its a closed fresh water/anti freeze system, don't follow your question on that. My 272LE does not have lazy jacks (wish I did) can't comment. The stuffing box takes 1/4" flax ( not 3/16 as stated in manual) and its always not easy to install. Enjoy your boat its going to be fun, happy sailing. Brian

272 Fuel Fill Tube Access

Jim, Brian is right about the access to the fuel tank being angled. I use a flexable 3/16 wooden dowel and have to bend it a little to the right to get it to go down the fill tube into the tank. When your cutlass bearing needs replacing and you have to pull your prop shaft, I recommend you replace the stuffing box with a dripless one. You will not be sorry and no more water in your bilge; check the 272 archives on this one. My lazy jacks deploy from the mast out onto the boom and I only put them out when I am droping sail in heavy weather. Otherwise, they aren't really needed on the 272, I almost took them off this spring. Welcome to 272 ownership, Frank

Lazy Jacks and prop shaft

Frank, your lazy jack use is just as I need when single handing it. Your system sounds interesting, is it commercially available or can you describe it more? I understand that the PSS dripless seal is very good but I installed Teflon impregnated packing with silicone grease and so far two seasons without a drop. The key is to tighten but not too much such that it still runs cold. Fraction of the cost of pss. Thanks Brian

272 Lazy Jacks

Brian, the Lazy Jack system is available from SailCare. Pictures are in their on-line catalog. The only negative was the shock cord part of the system required replacement after a year of so (and Sailcare replaced it for free). I also had a very good experience with their sail cleaning service and repair of my 1986 OEM sails. When I invest in new sails, I will consider a "stackpack" system (see Doyle Sails)or the Dutchman flaking system (also offered by Sailcare). Headed to the Bay this weekend, where is Chesapeake Isle? We sail out of Herring Bay south of Annapolis/Galesville. Frank

Thanks Brian

for answering the stuffing box question. I'll use 1/4" and look a teflon. How did they get that manual data wrong? (rhetorical question).

Frank, top of bay.

Frank, Chesapeake Isle is a little community just north of the light house down on Turkey Point. Our docks and mooring area is the first that you see on the port side after you pass the light heading up the Elk River Channel towards the C&D canal. As with other upper bay sailing a shallow draft keel is a benefit in this area. Brian.
