For those thinking of a transom mounted rudder with tab, Good Old Boat magazine has a couple of articles about transom hung rudders in this months copy. Also, in Bernard Moitessier's book "A Sea Vagabond's World" he praises the transom hung rudder with steering tab as being extremely simple and virtually indestructible which you can make yourself for next to nothing. See pages 54 and 55.  If you wanted to try it out, you could cut a semi balanced rudder out of plywood with a tab attached with simple hinges, attach the whole thing on the transom with hinges and clamps. (Remember this is only temporary to try out).  Center and lock your original rudder when underway and attempt to steer the boat only by turning the steering tab. Should work! You also may find the pressure required to move the tab is so little that you forget the wind part of it and hook your tiller pilot directly to the tab. Lots less power usage and lots less wear and tear on the tiller pilot.   Gordon  BTW, Bernard's book is a good read with lots of ideas.
