Appreciate the response on Flex-O-Fold props for a 450 or 460. The price of the 3 blade Flex-O-Fold for a 460 is about $1600. The Max Prop is $2700. The Martec AutoProp (Stainless Steel) is the same as the Flex-O-Fold. My concern is stopping the 460 quickly at speed and reverse power. I currently have a 2 blade racing Flex-O-Fold on my Express 35. Its a great prop but is ineffective at stopping the boat because the blades won't open in reverse if the forward speed is more than a few knots. I did meet the designer who explained that the racing prop blades fit closely together over the axis of the drive shaft providing relativly low force to open the blades against the pressure of the water trying to keep them closed. The 2 and 3 blade Flex-O-Fold cruising props move the pivot point 1.5-2 inches off axis thus providing a great amount of centrifigal force to open the blades. The blade design has more pitch near the hub and less near the tips to eliminate cavitation as compared to the relatively flat blades used on Max Prop, J Prop and Autoprop. He admitted that those designs are equally good in forward or reverse but claims his design is far mor efficient in forward and nearly as good in reverse. He claims he can stop his 47 foot 20 ton sailboat in 2-3 lengths at 8 knots. Very impressive if true. I am still trying to find someone using the 3 blade Flex-O Fold before I buy. He gave me a reference which I will check out and report. The big negative of this prop is that the pitch is not adjustable. You have to get it right the first time. They will exchange it if it is wrong provided you just try it one time, but this is very time consuming and expensive for multiple haul outs to change props. The Auto Prop and J Prop can be adjusted underwater. Max Prop is adjustable but requires disassembly. They also have an edjustable version but it is VERY expensive.

What he said is true

We did an exhange, from 14 pitch to 15. They were very accomodating. He is right when he said the blades on the 2 blade wide blade will open in reverse. Stopping is NOT a problem on our P42. He is also correct about the curve of the blade verses the flat Max Prop. Flex is much more efficient. My only concern would be that the Flex is too small for the 460. How big is their 3 blade prop? Did he think it was big enough? we have the 17x15 and I would rather have an 18x15, but they don't make it. We are still the fastest boat around under power or sail, though.

Question For Bradley Cavedo

I am considering replacing the 3 blade on my 2000 P420. Am I correct you have a two blade flex-o-fold on your P42? If so, could you tell me your speed-rpm performance and what it did for your sailing performance? Also, how it performs docking maneuvers. Thanks.

Bradley Cavedo Responds

Keep in mind that the P42 is a bigger boat that the 420; I think our P42 is about 26,000 pounds, 8,000 balast, 42.6 feet long and 62HP engine. We have the 17inch wide-blade [cruising] flex o fold with a 15 inch [maximum] pitch. This is the biggest 2-blade prop they make. With clean bottom, etc, at 3,050 rpm we cruise at 7.8kts. Max rpm is 3800. You must be able to hit 3,600 rpm or you blade is too big. So we could take a bigger prop, they just dont make it. You are supposed to spend most of you motoring time at 80 percent of maximum, so for us that is about 3000 to 3100. At 2000 we run at 5.5 to 6kts and at 1000 about 3.5 to 4 kts. Stopping is not a problem at all. I enter the slip at about 1kt idling in reverse and accerlate in reverse as bow passes the first two poles to about 2500 to 3000 rpm. It stops easily within 3/4 boatlengths. There is much less prop walk to the port in reverse than with a three blade. Under sail, we gained 3/4 to 1.5 kts in speed over the fixed 3 blade. It depends on wind conditions and angle of sail. We are very happy with speed under motor and sail. highly recommend this prop.

Thanks, Bradley

I appreciate the info. While I have no complaints about motoring and stopping with my three blade, I have been somewhat dissapointed with the 420's sailing performance (compared to my previous 35.5 and 37.5) and do get a lot of noise from prop rotation under sail. An extra knot or so would be great. I will look into the flex-o-fold. Thanks again.

More info on Flex-O-Fold (web site, phone #, etc)

Could anyone tell me where to find more information on the Flex-o-Fold prop? I looked on the web but was unsuccessful. My 460 will be commission on 11/18/00 and I considered the max prop but I thought it was a little expensive for shaft modification, and the prop itself(about 4k for a 3 blade) The 4 reviews on the Flex-o-Fold is very encouraging. My main concern with the prop is when the vessel is in reverse and the prop walk associated with it. Could anyone share their experience with this prop (2 or 3 blade) in reverse and a phone number to the dealer? Thanks a bunch!!!
