More on busted boom

This is a follow up to my posting a few days ago.

Boat: 1987 Newport 30-III

Attached are photos of the boom and gooseneck assembly. The missing part coming out of the boom is 1/2 inch in diameter and attached to the boom as shown.

My boom is approx 4.25" high and 3 inches wide, with rounded top and bottom and flat sides. I could not find the manufacturer name of the spars. Any ideas on exactly what I need and how to acquire one would be great.

If anyone in the Buffalo New York area knows of any local riggers or other N30-III owners with the same set up, please let me know.

Well I don't have a Newport 30 but I'll give you a couple of thoughts on it.
Your Boom end fitting looks like it comes off with 4 phillips screws so you should take it off and look inside. Most of what your missing may be there.
The pictures show a worn area with a groove in the bottom so I would Imagine that the 1/2" shaft came out of it, and was threaded into a rectangular piece that had a transverse hole in it, to accept a pin through the existing clevis on the mast fitting. The pinned joint will allow the boom to bend up and down and the shaft will allow the boom to turn about it's axis. The little groove or detent at the bottom of the wear area leads me to believe that the shaft might have been spring loaded such that the spring (inside the boom) pushed the boom forward into the rectangular piece to lock the boom in a non rotating attitude. So that if you wanted to rotate the boom to, lets say, Reef or roller furl the main, you would have to pull back on the boom and then turn it.

So if you remove the end fitting you may find a spring and a shaft in there and if not you may have to make those pieces and that's not very hard.

You would first have to make the almost rectangular piece out of a piece of stainless flat bar. One side (the side towards the boom) would have a relief so that the proud portion would fit into the detent in the end fitting. Drill two holes in it. One clean through for a pin and another into the notched edge to tap, for your 1/2" bolt. Then get the proper sized bolt (actually a machine screw) with a washer and spring and insert it into the shaft hole from the inside, and thread it into the tapped hole. You will have to use locktite or pin the threaded connection to prevent the bolt from backing out. But that is basically all there is to it.

If you have any doubts you could have your local machine shop make it up for you.
