My 1974 oday22 came with two bilge pumps in the starboard bilge under the cockpit. This is all well and good except I have water in my bilge for which I have a two inch hole to pump it out and there is no connection between the center bilge and the one containing two bilge pumps. Is there somewhere I can get a diagram showing me what is going on below decks or does someone know why the bilges aren't connected. Water is very frustrating and until I get all the little leaks in this boat plugged up a wet bilge looks like a reality. I can't seem to pump-down all the way in the center bilge so I guess I'd like to know where the 'sweet spot'(low spot) is. thanks Mort

I'm also curious, Mort. I've looked through the archives, and a few folks have modified their bilge access hole to a larger diameter. From what I can see by peering into the 2" hole, it's a very narrow bilge. It also seems to have a metal piece (brace of some sort?) at the aft end of this hole. I'm afraid that if I drill a larger access hole, I may compromise the existing design and realy screw things up. Like others here have done, I'd like to install a bilge pump in the main access hole and pump it out through the transom. Hopefully someone who's been through this modification can help us out...

Bilge

I used to own a 22 and put the bilge pump about a foot forward of the access hole after enlarging to 6 in. and putting in a clear screw out port. Water will drain from aft area to this center bilge above the keel. I ran the pump hose to the cockpit with a small clamshell vent over the opening to direct the water downward .......Ron

bilge in the middle

My 1974 22 has only one pump and it is located in the middle of the main cabin. It is at the lowest point when the boat is in the water. When you are sitting on the starbord side in the middle of the birth between the companionway and the sink cabinet, the pump is right between your feet.(over the keel) the tube that the water is ejected to runs to the rear of the boat and into the cockpit and then flows out from there. I hope this helps -- My access hole is about 6 inches across and this was the way it was when I got the boat.

looks like an owner upgrade

Thanks to all who have replied. It looks like Oday didn't allow for water in this bilge as I will have to drill a hole and install pump and pipe to handle this water. I don't know if having water come gushing out at the feet of my guests onboard is what I want. I do, however, like the idea of the water exiting through the transom. I'm not real trilled with the aspect of violating the hull one more time than it already is, but it appears as though it has been done successfully. I think I will take a little time and build up my courage for this one. Again, thanks to all, Mort

If you do vent through the Transom be sure you are high enough to avoid siphoning water back into the bilge
