I posted how my Raymarine ST60 wind instrument was acting up on me. I have since found that doing a Dealer Reset to factory default will fix it.... until I have the power turned off for a while. Then it comes back on with wind off on the wrong direction and only pointing to the starboard half of the display. Sounds like there is a battery inside to keep the settings. Anybody run into this before?

My Raymarine wind instrument is the worse wind instrument I've ever had. I bought the boat new. The dealer replaced two displays. I've given up. It works fine sometimes then it goes crazy. I always have to check my Windex. It's just a poor product. I have a B&G on my other boat, 15 years and it still works fine.

No battery inside

I've had mine apart and did not see a "backup battery." I suspect that there is a section of either the sensor cable or the SeaTalk cable that has a poor ground/shield. These are low voltage circuits (<5 volts) and the shield/ground circuit protects the signal from noise. Noise would make the unit act very odd and random. An oscilloscope would be the best tool to diagnose this problem. You can try using a mulit meter on the lowest voltage setting to measure the ground circuit (against a battery negative terminal, TRUE pure ground with no noise) and see if the needle "twitches" on the lowest setting. Get as close to the unit as possible to measure this. This would indicate a voltage (noise) in the ground circuit which should not be there.
Could also be EMI (electromagnetic interference) from another piece of electric gear. Try turning off everything else and see if that improves the performance. Battery chargers and inverters are the worst offenders. Even in standby mode. Saw a battery charger that was unplugged from shore power but still had the 12 volt side attached that produced noise into the 12 volt circuit even when it was turned off. Depth sounders sensor cables can also cause problems.

There are no batteries inside these units. They will default to factory settings and do strange things. replace with non Raymarine is my suggestion.

The unit worked OK yesterday on a 14 hour motor/sail across Lake Ontario. It did this without a reset to factory defaults. I don't believe the battery charger has any bearing here since I am off dock-side A.C. when the unit is turned on. Noise? Maybe something there. However, I haven't added any new electronics in a couple years or more, and this problem is new this year. I have sent a service question to Raymarine and see how they respond.

New equipment not required

You don't have to change anything to get a new noise source. The connections in any device can result in the device pumping noise into the power cables.

I suspect there is an EEProm or other NV RAM inside that holds the user settings. It has probably gone bad.
