IS THE TRUTH OUT THERE?... about the correct prop size(PITCH?) for my 1983 H 34? I've searched the archives and only got more confused. Called Hunter Marine, they were not sure if they kept using the wrong prop after switching to the Yanmar 3GMF. Yanmar says it really depends on the reduction gear ratio, I have the Hurth transmission but not sure of the ratio. The prop I have now is a 15x12 does this number refer to diameter (15) and pitch 12)? If the prop I need is a 15x15 don't I need to change just the pitch ? A local propeller shop can change the pitch on my prop to 14 for only $35 as compared to $195 for a new 15x15 prop. Also interested in the alteration to a prop that can reduce prop walk (sure), the shop here had not heard of this I have noticed it takes a LOT of reverse thrust to stop and the boat seems underpowered in forward. I thought it was just not enough horsepower but now I believe it is the prop. Looking for someone with specific experience on this subject... and always, thanks Charles & Lynn "Artistry"

Charles: I would like you to call these guys about your prop problems. I have spoken to them in the past and have heard very good things about them from others. They seem to have the answer to some of the questions that you are asking. Their name is Kilian Propeller 510/614-0596 sfboating.com/kilian kilianprop.com They are located in the SF Bay area. Speak with them and let me know what you think about their take on a two bladed prop for your boat. Steve Dion steve@sdcsoftware.com

Prop Walk

Having sailed an h34 for 6-7 years I am able to anticipate the amount of prop walk to expect and use it to my advantage whenever I can. I always back into my slip and the walk to port will turn me right into it every time. Changing the prop pitch will have little effect. It's much easier to just deal with it. When entering a service dock put the starboard side on the dock whenever possible. When leaving use reverse to walk you away. As for pitch changes - it would depend on the RPM's of your motor. Compare the maximium RPM you can reach under power to the manual. When cruising you should use 80% of wide open as a maximium. Record the RPM and hull speed. A good prop shop will know how much to "tweek it". They can do calculations of RPM's and pitch to obtain a speed estimate. Sorry for the lack of detail. I have the Westerbeke with a broken tach that motors at 7.1 knots max. Barry s/v "PER DIEM too"
