Of all the tanks on your boat, which do you wish were larger? Would you prefer to the greater cruising range provided by larger fuel tanks? How about the security of more fresh water? Is the size of your waste tank driving you crazy? Or are you reasonably satisfied with all the tankage on your boat? Tell your tank tales here, then vote in this week's Quick Quiz at the bottom of the home page.

TANKS

Fuel tanks would be better if they held more than 100 gallons just for the winter. we live aboard and run our webasco heat from deisel fuel and filling in the winter in n,y. is a problem with 5 gallon johnny cans. When the water is not froze we can go to the fuel dock.

Satisfied

I don't use any of my tanks enough to merit bigger ones. The holding tank would be fine for several days of continuous use, the water tank is plenty big, hardly use any gas so they're fine. But if I lived aboard... :-( LaDonna

Tanks for Asking

I have two H2O tanks on my C-30, holding about 22 gallons. That usually is sufficient to get from one slip to another, with a day or two at anchor in-between. The holding tank is sufficient, too. But, if I were to run out of fuel at the wrong time (like in a current with no wind) then I'd be up the creek without a paddle, litterally. I have 12 gallons of fuel which lasts about 24 hours at cruising speed. I'd like another 6 gallons to be safe. Mike Scott - Windstar (C-30)

The answer might depend on where the boat is.

If my C36 was parked in an ocean somewhere, instead of a land-locked Texas lake, I might have a problem with the fuel tank, and might not even care about the size of my holding tank. Instead, my fuel tank gives me 6 to 12 months of regular usage between fill ups, and my holding tank won't make it a full weekend. If I thought it were possible to find someone criminally negligent for the holding tank size, I'd go after 'em!

Tankage

22 gallons of fuel is plenty for me in Puget Sound. My last boat had 2 water tanks totaling 70 gals. 2 tanks is nice. When #1 runs out, you switch to #2 and start thinking about the next fill up. You still have 35 gals left so there's no hurry. My present boat has one 65 gal tank. I'm installing a gauge (just purchased from this website) so I will have peace of mind again. There's nothing worse than the wife being all soaped up and running out of water. As for the waste tank. 15 gallons is a joke. Now I'm hearing grumblings about grey water tanks. Help!!!

I wish...

the MSD Waste tank was in a better location. I fear the day it leaks as the only way I can see getting to it is to cut into the deck!

Usage is the key...

When we are living on the boat in some harbor away from home the holding tank is way too small. 30 gallons on the 380 with a family of four for 8 days required two visits from the pump out boat! At other times 30 gallons is more than adequate. Occasionally I wish for more fresh water too since we flush the head with fresh water to avoid the horrible smells of decomposing sea life from the salt water intake hose. All in all Hunter did a good job with the tankage though since another water tank would take up too much space under a settee and I need for storage. Fuel at 30 gallons in more than adequate for the year even with two long cruises and lots of day sails, I don't use more than 20 gallons in the 6 month season. Bob Knott H380

Fuel lasts forever

The twenty gallons of diesel seem to last forever on my 84 C-27. Burning 1/4 to 1/2 gallon per hour, it takes a long time to burn up the fuel. Sometimes I wish I could go through the fuel faster, so that it was fresher in the tank. The capacity is nice to have though, as we've motored 18+ hours straight without fear of running out of fuel. Adequate Tankage

We have a 1995 336 with 30 gals each for Fuel and Waste with 70+Gals for water.. Generally for a 34' boat we find this adequate... If I was looking for add'l sizing it would be waste.. Wilkie Marvel

Holding tank

For those of us who are constantly in a no discharge area, a 17 gallon holding tank is a real bother. Water tankage is huge and we would gladly trade one of our three water tanks for another holding tank. Does anyone know of a successful modification like this ???

Holding

We find that for weekends, the holding tank is just large enough for a two day trip. Sure would be nice to not have to worry about it for a week or so. The Water supply is on the small side too. I wish it were 150 gallons instead of the 75 we now have. This would take the worry out of cruising places where water is scarce.
